Prior to this past year, I would have been fine with it. It wasn't even "The Decision" that turned me off -- I thought it was a stupid thing to do, but felt it was more the brainchild of a bad PR person than LeBron. I felt Gilbert was absolutely in the wrong with his reaction to James leaving, and while I understand Cleveland fans being upset that he left, I didn't understand the animosity shown towards someone who wanted to win a championship, and even left a little on the table to get that opportunity. So often in sports we see players vilified for wanting money first, and winning second.
But as the year went on, it became clear to me why everyone was actually miffed at Lebron's free agency drama, and that was the ego-stroking he seemed to need, all the time. He loves being the center of attention, but only when people are praising him. If he gets questioned about his decision-making, he snaps back. If things go poorly on the court, and he blames others for wanting him to fail. He doesn't win a championship, and all the little people should be little people. The ego is massive, probably the biggest in all of sports. The constant need for adulation is even more massive. I just don't think I could watch the Celtics if he were in Green. Because it wouldn't be the Celtics anymore, or the Green. It would just be Lebron.
