In hindsight, if you had the #1 pick in the 1998 draft, would you pick Paul or Dirk?

I would say it depends on the team. A team looking for a #1 scorer, a franchise centerpiece, I would pick Dirk. A team with an established player or other solid pieces, I'd take Paul for his better passing and defense.

What no Kandi man?

Tough choice.  Hard to imagine life with no Pierce.  I guess I'd stick with Paul, but that's probably a homer answer.

Yup

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.

The C's have Antoine Walker playing Forward so I'd rather take Paul Pierce.

I would've traded that pick + Ron Mercer for the rights of Vince Carter. Imagine how much excitement would that bring. It might not win us a championship 10 years after but hey, it's 1998, nobody knows it yet.

But if it's the #1 overall were talking about, I probably would've taken Kandi and be ashamed of myself in the next years. Hey, I wouldn't know, he had so much buzz.

Pierce/Dirk + Mercer for Vince? Why would anybody want that, especially in hindsight?

Now, Antoine for the rights to Dirk would have been amazing.  Dirk + Pierce would have been a fun combo

My first thought was Dirk. Then it occurred to me that Pierce survived Pitino.  I'm not sure a 19 year old Dirk would have done that.  I'd like to think he would have, but Rick might have really messed him up.

The Truth.  Not to mention the risk it would've involved taking the "phenom" European considering the busts that continent has produced.

I'm gonna stick with Paul.  Drafting Paul led eventually to a championship.  There's no guarantee drafting Dirk would have done the same.

i dont know if mgmt wouldn't have just traded away dirk if he got drafted by us. so in the end, we'd end up with no pierce and no dirk. that'd suck.

In hindsight the answer has to be Dirk.  At the time, Pierce was the more safe bet.
do it

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.
If nobody knew what was going to happen at the time, and we could only choose between the 2, It would most likely be Dirk. Paul Pierce blossomed coming into the league, while we already had Walker, and were in need for another big.
