...you could get Iggy in return? Here's how, in three scenarios...

Philly is potentially up for sale. Normally teams in that position want to reduce salary. Boston needs to get younger and more athletic at the 2 & 4 spots

Scenario #1:
Boston Trades: JO, Ray & Jeff Green
Philly trades: Iggy, Nocioni & Battie

The money works.
Why for Boston: Primarily - we get a long term replacement for Ray and a good back court partner for Rondo - good match up for Dwayne Wade.

Why for Philly:
1. Cap space - Ray and JO come are expiring...Green is a better fit for them.They could also buy out Ray to further reduce their cap / salary - and Jo for that matter.

2. They are currently discussing Iggy for Ellis - that is lateral to me and not a good fit. Nick Young in the back court with Holiday and Green at the SF, with cap space moving forward is a better fit for them.

Boston now looks like:

MLE / Krstic? / Battie
KG / Big Baby? / Murphy? / LLE? / Vet Min?
Pierce / Nocioni
Iggy / Wafer
Rondo / DWest / Bradley
* Plus we have three first round picks this year and next
       
Scenario #2 - If you want to Keep Green:
Boston trades: Ray, JO, a resigned Big Baby to make the numbers work, plus one of #1 picks.
Philly trades: Iggy & Battie
* Again, clear cap space for Philly

Boston:

MLE / Krstic / Battie
KG / LLE? / #1 pick this year / Murphy?
Pierce / Green
Iggy / DWest / Wafer
Rondo / DWest / Bradley 

* I like a Rondo, Iggy, Green + our #1 pick this year, moving forward.

Scenario #3 - if you want to keep Ray and get Iggy
Boston Trades: JO & a resigned JeffG
Philly trades: Iggy & Battie

Boston looks like:

MLE / Krstic / Battie
KG / Big Baby? / Draft pick?
Pierce / Iggy -
Ray / DWest
Rondo / Bradley

* We use our LLE for another small forward behind Pierce, some vet min signings at point, SG and PF.

Thoughts?

Very True re Ray -at the same time, how do you put another piece together with Rondo and Green ( if you think Green is part of the next team...) ?

My main thoughts on this aren't just with Iggy - though I think he's a very logical target.

My thought is that for some team, like Philly, who is maybe looking to make a salary move and move a player of Iggy's caliber... the combination of a cheaper but good player in Jeff Green, who can start, along with either Ray or JO is a fair amount of value.

* You get a mid or major expiring contract ( JO or Ray )
* A very good young player with starter potential in Green
* possible a 1st round pick from us if the player being traded to us merits that additional consideration...

We could make a move this off season for a significant player if we want to.

But I hear you re the Ray sentimental investment - I have that myself....

I don't believe in acquiring bad contracts unless you are either sending out a bad contract in return or receiving draft picks and/or young players on cheap contracts as compensation.

Iguodala is a good player with a bad contract.

I like Iguodala, and think he's a good team player.  But some of these trade ideas are really overvaluing him, especially considering he doesn't have a great contract.  Iggy is not an All-Star caliber player, and is probably in the 35-45 range in terms of best players in the league. 

I have to assume JO, RA, and BBD can net something far greater than Iggy.  That's three starters, 2 of which have expiring contracts, and none of which are bad contracts (assuming BBD gets a fair deal).

I may be overvaluing Iggy. But as others have mentioned and which I also indicated in one reply, I think we could make a move this summer for a significant player with a team looking to move salary.

And if you combine that significant young player, with Rondo, Green, DWest, Pierce, KG and three 1st round draft picks, MLE, LLE, some vet min signings...

We could add a nice piece - especially if we were willing to include Ray with Green. But as others have mentioned, that is a tough one for me as well, to move Ray...

I can see trading ray but its a different if:
yes iggy is a good player but kind of falls into the pierce & green alley that we already have
WHO is going to spread the floor like ray does? 
If we are trading ray it has to be for a center or a younger shooting guard.  Also as others have stated, iggy good player who has an expensive contract

I don't think Iggy is worth not having cap flexibility later on and as previously mentioned he's pretty much a Pierce clone without the range or efficiency.

I'ld rather have Ray on his one year contract for now. Iggy's better defense at the 2 doesn't make up for Ray's ability to spread the floor for a one year run at the title, which 2011-2012 will be. Ray leaves after the season. Iggy kills the C's cap thereafter.

The major rumor that came out a day or two ago was a deal centered around AI and Monta Elis.  This type of deal makes a lot more sense for PHI.  I don't see why they would have any interest in older players.

If I could trade his contract, Jeff Green and let's say a #1 pick for a young, talented player at the 2,4 or 5 spot that I saw as a long term solution at that position, you'd have my undivided attention as the GM of the Boston Celtics.

I love Ray's game, and it would be hard to part with based on his character as well. It's amazing that Ray Allen can do what he does at his age.

But Ray Allen will be "36" "years" "old" by the end of next season.

Will Ray play off guard for us for the next 4 years? 3 years? 2 Years?

If I could trade him and two future #1 picks for a young off guard, center or PF... or if I could trade Ray, JeffG and a #1 pick, or two, for something like Rudy Gay and Darnell Arthur? I'm seriously considering it.

I'm not saying I necessarily think Rudy or Darnell are "the guys" and it would depend on what value you place on Jeff Green in any trade scenarios.

I am just throwing those two scenarios out there as examples.

Also, the overall point is that if Ainge wants to make a "bigger move" this summer for some max or close to max player who could be on the move, we have enough pieces to make that move.

Ray's contract and his talent = value
Jermaine's contract = value
Jeff G = value
three #1 picks = value

I think team's talent lies with KG, Pierce, Ray and Rondo - we can do patch work at the center position with the MLE, LLE and Vet Mins. If we trade Ray but get a great young OG, Center or PF, we'll still be very good, possible better.

First i must admit, I'm not that big an Iggy fan. I think he's pretty good, but not great. While I might consider trade Ray for him, and I said consider, I certainly wouldn't include O'Neal and/or Green to get Battie.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought JO played pretty well in the playoff, especially considering he had a broken wrist. I certainly think he's a better option that Batman. I also think you're under valueing Green. i think givent he chance to go through a training camp, he'll be a asset to this team.
