Celtics G Ray Allen exercises contract option for 2011-12

The Celtics announced today that guard Ray Allen has exercised the option on his contract for next season.

The widely expected move will bring Allen back for a fifth season with the Celtics. The 36-year-old averaged 16.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists last season, making his 10th All-Star team in the process. He shot a career-high 44.4 percent from 3-point range and became the league’s all-time 3-point leader when he passed Reggie Miller in a game against the Lakers on Feb. 10.

I like the move.  There must be a handshake deal with Ray and Danny that he won't be traded.  Why would he re-up with the chance that he could be traded to a non-contender, when he could just become a free-agent now and get the mid-level over a few years from one of the powerhouses?

Ray will end his career as a Celtic, I think he signs for the minimum for 2 years when his current contract ends, retiring together with Pierce.

He could just get a buyout and do the same thing if he's traded.

Happy to hear it.  Glad I'll get to see Ray in Green again.

This is simple. Money. There is no hand shake deal. If Danny has to trade Ray, Ray knows it's business. His $10 million contract will look really good for a team having a fire sale.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

I don't think either view is correct.

1) The midlevel may not exist next year.  So that's one big reason that Ray didn't go that route.  Even when one considers that, why would Ray want a 3 year 20 million deal when he can take a guaranteed 10 million this year and then (if he wants) pursue the remaining 10 million afterwards.  For all we know, Ray has another good year and still gets the middle level offer next summer (assuming it exists).

2) I don't see Danny trading Ray.  And it's not because of a secret handshake.  Quite frankly, I don't see any deal really being palatable.  Contenders who would want Ray for his game likely won't give us anything.  Young teams won't want him for anything else but his expiring deal.  And while that sounds great on paper, what are these young teams actually going to give us?  It's not like the Wizards are going to give us John Wall to "dump" 10 million dollars.  More than likely, a team would offer us overpaid veterans with long deals.  And it's not worth taking on such salaries and hurting our chances in free agency.

Awesome news.

Now let's hope we get to actually see him play next year(because of the lockout not because he could get traded).

That is why Boston has the best chemistry. The guys love being here.

And that is also why Danny Ainge shouldn't have traded Perk. There is a great chance that Perk would have came back. If he didn't, Ainge would not be the one to blame. A small forward for the bits and pieces we had would've been alright.

Hopefully, Ainge doesn't trade Ray Allen too. You know he loves being here and we love him here too.

Perk wasn't coming back.  He already turned down the max offer the C's were allowed to give him.

Good to see Ray committ early.  He had me worried last year.

Ray won his ring and broken the 3 point record with "C's"  ,  have to admitt nice to see him wanting to retire a Celtic.....and I think RAY is the type of guy to ALWAYS be hanging around Boston 's club house and now wants be remembered as a CELTIC first and foremost.  One of the most potent teams ever in their prime...   Yep with this type of player as a reference for our club , we could do alot worse.
