5 year PG hiatus

Was talking about Jrue Holiday this morning, and how he was a middle of the road pg, and randomly pondered whether or not he would ever be more than that since most of the pgs ahead of him are also relatively young and improving.

Got me to thinking, did point guards go on a 5 years hiatus in the early part of this decade?  Without mulling through rosters and off the top of my head I can't really think of any pgs who are in their prime (27-30).  Maybe Baron Davis but I think he is like 31, and I am talking starting pgs here, so Steve Blake doesn't count. 

But it really does seem like every starting pg in the league is either a young and upcoming player that came into the league in the last 5 years (Rondo, Westbrook, Rose, Tyreke, Jennings, Curry), or is on their last leg like Nash, Kidd, Andre Miller, Billups and Fisher.

Any thoughts before I go through the 2000- 2003 drafts and look at the point guards picked?  This already has me thinking Jay Williams.......

Probably have to agree with you there, especially since the 1 guy in that age group that has come to mind since posing the initial question is Tony Parker. 

Just somewhat surprising to me and had never thought of it before and wondered if anyone else had ever thought of it.

Yeah but wouldn't that benefit PG's in their late 20's as well?

Not as much as it would the young PGs. Though I think Rondo, CP3, Deron are all 25-27.

I'm not sure what period the OP is referring to, is he talking about 2000-2005? Or 2005-2010?

I went through the 01-04 drafts and it's actually funny because there were only 5 pgs taken in the lottery in those 4 drafts combined (DeJuan Wager, Hinrich, TJ Ford, JayWill and DHarris). 

So maybe you are right with your initial response, but also might have to do with a poor crop of pgs in those years to begin coinciding with freakish injuries and the like to Wager, JWill and Ford.  I guess in all fairness Hinrich and Harris are starting.

I'm talking about the lack of starting point guards in their late 20s, 27-30, so assumingly the 01-04 drafts.

Yeah if anything its a talent issue that just ebbs and flows. For example people complain about how few "true centers" there are. But that's not due to anything other than there aren't many 7 foot tall people in the world and even fewer than those have the inate talent/athleticism to play in the NBA. So some eras will have more Cs than others.

It's just something random I thought of.  On the other hand this probably allowed guys like Kidd and Nash to remain elite point guards for so long since the generation behind them was a total bust and other guys close to their age like AI, and Marbury weren't able to hang around.
