Pure Salary dumps for good players don't happen as often as fans hope.

You're absolutely right.  But when the question is whether you would rather have a guy who has been injured nearly his entire career and is coming off microfracture surgery, locked up to a large, longterm deal (because that is what it would take to steal him from Portland), versus having cap space, I take the cap space.

I just think the chances of Oden ever being a quality player, let alone a star are so slim right now.

Taking a risk is one thing, but given the C's situation, that is a completely unnecessary risk.

I agree with Chris completely.  If we all thought Shaq was a huge health risk, this guy is that times a billion.

How big of a contract do you think we would need to sign him for? I think that if we worked out a sign and trade we could get him for 2 or 3 years at just north of his qualifying offer (around $9 MM). This hardly kills our cap for the future. Due to his injury history I bet he signs for short years because he feels he can improve upon his play and make himself a lot more money.

It sounds like you are thinking 12+ for 4 years +. If this is the case I agree that he is not worth the risk.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Well, supposedly Portland is going to offer him the nearly $9 qualifying offer.  If they are in fact willing to do that (and it makes sense for them, since even if he signs it, they get another year to see if he gets healthy), then I think it would take years at the full MLE at minimum to sign him without Portland matching, and likely more than that.

For me, $9 million a year for multiple years is completely out of the question (and who do we sign and trade for him)?

Given the C's situation, I absolutely think have $6 million, let alone $9-10 million of dead money (which it would be if he is not healthy) on the cap in 2012 could set them back years in the rebuilding process.

Blazers' acting GM ... Do you anticipate Oden playing for the Trail Blazers next season?

Uh, you know, we've had a lot of discussions about Greg. At this point we haven't made any definitive decision on anything with him at this point. That's our vision, how we envision next season, that he will be playing for us

You have to wonder about this franchise and it's track record when it comes to the front office since they've now gone through 3 GM's in a year. What's evident was ownership knew about B. Roy's knees but pressured Pritchard into offering that max. contract. So why would they repeat being second guessed with Oden when they could trade him and get some cap relief?

Indeed $6m/ is a fair price to pay, but what GM is extending Oden more than 2 years guaranteed? It's palatable to perhaps move Kristic (S/T) and the Quis (TPE) for Oden. Portland needs a durable back up for Camby, and the $2.3m could help with moving A. Miller's contract (team option this year). They may even consider JO, which would be ironic to see him wind down his career back where it all started.

Danny never takes the cookie cutter approach, and Oden is still young enough for him or another GM to gamble $12m over two years. But I agree Portland can keep him at $9m.

The thing is is Oden has massive potential. He's still young and when he's healthy he's probably the best center in the NBA not named Dwight Howard. And, even though he's been chronically injured I think most NBA people think he has a good shot at making a recovery and contributing at some point in his career.

He's worth a flier because he's legitimately good enough to make a team a contender pending good health.
