I think he is just frightened of surgeries in general, like when he avoided knee surgery. He should just suck it up, do it now and get it over with.  We need him next year. Shaq retired, Nenad is a FA and might go to russia, all we have is JO, he better do whatever he can to be ready.

This is where the organization should step in and ... "SUGGEST" he goes through with the surgery ... This sounds like an excuse waiting to happen ... C'MON DANNY ... what a JOKE. Shaq retires and now our only veteran/injury prone center is electing to play through NEXT season with a wrist injury that was used as an excuse for poor play THIS YEAR ... THE 2010-2011 SEASON ISN'T EVEN OVER YET ... GET THE SURGERY JERMAINE. (PS ... you're a BUM>:(

If it needs surgery get it done. If it doesn't then why would there be a need to put it off a year?

O'Neal's putting off surgery is just another move on his part to play another half season and get paid for a whole season. He's been doing this for 8 years.

2004-05 - 44 games
2005-06 - 51 games
2006-07 - 69 games
2007-08 - 42 games
2008-09 - 68 games
2009-10 - 70 games
2010-11 - 24 games

Dude has played in 64% of the available games over the last 7 years. I fully expect him to have a problem with the wrist in training camp, be in trouble with it to start the season. Play 10-15 games. Go out with the wrist injury. Decide to have the surgery before the All-Star break and come back late in the season and be ineffective. Total games played, less than 35.

I was actually surprised that it was 64%.

O'Neal will clearly tank next year like the previous one.

This was so predictable that I can't understand Danny, who knows the player a lot better than I do, couldn't see through it.

He probably figured that between JO and Shaq they would be able to hold down the fort until Perk came back.  I thought it was a good move myself.

Well, I suppose the good news is is that if he does heal, this apparently means he isn't retiring.

And while I'm worried about his ability to not hold up, if healthy, I think he has a chance to be better than he was last year and the year before.  He's only Pierce's age.

O’Neal said wrist surgery would have sidelined him for at least four months. Even with a lockout pushing the start of the season back, he knew his conditioning would once again be an issue upon his return and in many ways, he would have the same problems that he experienced this past season.

While surgery on the wrist will have to be done “at some point in my life,” O’Neal said a battery of tests in recent weeks on the wrist have come back positive.

This sounds quite reasonable to me. I don't get all this hate on JO. He played through pain for as long as he could and after surgery he worked his ass off to get ready on time for the playoffs.

It's not hate (at least not from me).

I understand he's playing through pain/injuries and applaud him for that, but it all doesn't matter if the Celtics aren't winning.

Last thing this team needs is more injury related excuses. This season was disastrous in terms of Center health, don't want a frustrating repeat.

While we are talking about wrist surgery, what happened to all of the talk about his knee being bone-on-bone and how there was no way to solve that problem. I am assuming he still suffers from this condition, which is going to limit his playing time anyway, correct?

The corpse of JO will hunt you down.

If I were Danny, this guy would be traded.

Do not like the sound of this at all.

Obviously his conditioning for certain basketball skills would suffer without the use of one arm but no good reason why he wouldn't be able to maintain an otherwise good fitness base.

We need him most for the end of the season, not the start!

We'll see what happens next year I guess... :(

I got injured on company time, I'll get the surgery on company time.

I may be wrong and know nothing about the injury but I thought he WAS playing bone-on-bone before the surgery and that's why he opted to surgery. I thought the risk with surgery was that he might not have recovered for the playoffs in time. I assumed that after surgery that was no longer a problem.

As for the wrist thing I'm just confused why he wouldn't get surgery. The article made it sound like he was putting it off so he could play next year?

It seems clear to me.  Getting surgery would delay his return and he feels put him behind others when he does come back.  Assuming the doctors think his wrist will be okay, I don't see an issue here.
