Is point-guard most overrated position in the NBA?

look at that list yuck. Parker's finals MVP is still up for debate. He had 20/10 Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili in his prime. Piston's won the championship as a team. Billups and Parker are the two exceptions on that list. The rest of field were along with the ride. Point-guard is the least important position in the NBA to win a championship.

NBA is still size driven for the most part. 



Even the Heat are driven by an oversized SF. 


Great PGs rarely win without the big man.  Even the greatest and biggest PG needed the 3rd best C of all time to win multiple titles.

I think positions in general are overrated.  It is about talent and ability.  Although size is a big part of that. 

What I think you will find is that success is not dictated by a certain position.  Instead, it is driven by great players on balanced rosters...and most great players have good to great size for their positions. 

Lebron, Kobe, KG, Duncan, Jordan, Hakeem, Bird, Magic. 

All of these guys were at least ideal size, if not big for their positions.  It didn't matter what position they played, just that they were the best player on the court and able to dominate the players forced to cover them.

Yes I think it is hard to argue that it isn't. Either most overrated or least important.

  At any given time in the nba there are a few transcendent players. If you have one of those you're in good shape. Re-do your list in the 80s and 90s and it's littered with Magic/DJ/Isiah. It's not the specific position. Without giving it a lot of thought, was Bird the last sf to lead a team to a title? Are Shaq and Hakeem the only great centers to win since the 70s? How many sgs besides Kobe and MJ are on the list, one year of Wade? People say pg doesn't matter, as if putting Magic on your team wouldn't make you an instant contender.

  The Celts almost won a title last year when many people felt our best player was a pg. We could have done the same this year.

Great points here, also by Chris. It's all about talent level. Luc Longley started on a championship winning team, as did Kendrick Perkins. It doesn't mean that big men are overrated when it comes to winning championships.

Exactly. There just hasn't been any great point guards in recent history who have had the luxury of playing with a couple other great players. If they had, I'm sure they would have titles. Stockton, Payton, Kidd, Paul, williams, etc, really haven't gotten a chance to play with great players at the pinnacle of their careers.

Do you think it might have something to do with the fact that when the best player AND highest paid player on your team is a PG, then you are limiting yourself in attaining a superstar at another position?

For some time now the best players every year coming out in the draft seems to be PGs. So teams draft them and then invest max contracts on them. These teams tend not to be good because they are drafting high in the draft and so they are investing the most money and future in a PG which limits their abilities to gather max level contract talent around them.

I thought this was where the thread was going.

Due to the rule changes or whatever, there is a point guard "bubble" right now where quick guards with good handle all excel, but this means their "value" is inflated, in that you don't need to invest max or near max money for these guys as you can pick up a few in each draft and spend your dough elsewhere and be better off.
