I go back and forth with this idea
Instant scoring off the bench if he does. Plus does it really matter who starts? The thing that matters is who finishes
However I think it may mess with the rhythm and consistency (if you could say our group has consistency) that the 'big 4' have

He doesn't need to come off the bench, BUT Rivers needs to make better rotations.  This falls on Doc Rivers, nobody else.  He needs to figure out ways to make this team more effective.  Better rotations is one of those ways.  Does he really expect a full 2nd unit to be effective?  Instead of having Pierce play the first 14 minutes of a game then sit an extended stretch, play him the first 6, bring in Green for 3-4, bring Pierce back in and then let him use the time in between the first quarter to get another breather.  He needs to make quicker subs to get these guys to be fresher.  Shorter shifts for the big 3, but more shifts so theyre playing the same minutes.

Scott Brooks let his bench, along with Durant, close out a game this off season. It was a very risky, but in my opinion, brilliant move. Yeah, the Thunder lost the series and the Mavs moved on. But the experience those young guys got in that first quarter made the OKC team much better moving forward.

At some point, we just need to throw these guys (Bradley & Green)in and let them run. It'll make us stronger in the long run.

I'm not sure if anyone watched Ray trying to guard DWade during the playoffs. It was a layup line to the rim. That's not a knock on Ray, the guy is 35. Next year he'll be 36 - as an off guard.

The same is going to be the case more and more with KG, Ray and yes, Pierce.

I'd love to see a situation where a Carl Landry, Jeff Green and a Rudy Fernandez are eating up a lot of minutes during the regular season next year.

We need to get on with the process of building real, legit options behind these guys and you have to play the new guys to get there.

I would have given TA the starting role last year and told Ray he's coming off the bench as a classic sixth man.

Would the team change, yeah. We'd have had alot more break opps with TA and Rondo, would have had less outside shooting but more slashing and one helluva defensive back  court. DWade would have had a miserable second round with TA in his jock.

We would have had to design a different half court offense and Ray would have been lighting it up off the bench.

But that might not have been all bad.

As long as these young guys get a lot of miles next year I really don't care who starts. But I think Ray should be at around 25-28 minutes a night and Pierce at around 28-32 a night. KG 25-30.

Yeah, good point MBz. I've always hated Doc's rotations or lack there of.

It's more a minutes thing for me than a who starts issue.

Although, I do have some doubts about starting a 36 year old off guard.

Ray's an animal but I just think it's time to take a load off, he'll be more productive as a result of it I think.

If we don't add crawford/jr smith pierce will be forced to become a 6th man... its sumthin we could of done last year but the last minute trade doesn't help... if pierce is on the bench rondo will become our number 1 option which I would like for him to start looking for his own shot more... also rondo needs sum more athletic weapons out there anyway so its not a bad idea honestly there's more pros then cons if we gave pierce the manu role

I think this is getting at the idea.

The way the team was constructed, for much of the past two years was the *starting 5* and then the bench, just to hold up the lead. Sorry, but that's a go nowhere program which leads to the classic Q4 offensive slump, esp with older veterans.

I'd still opt for Pierce over Ray because Pierce, in limited minutes, is still one of the top wingmen in the league. Thus, he gives the bench a certain something which no one else can. And realize, Paul is a leader by example, and that's what the bench needs, not a KG yelling at them from the aisles.

I believe my plan will bring back a type of 2004 Pierce performance, on a nightly basis, and esp in the playoffs. And unlike Manu, Pierce is a durable machine. Ginobilli's ankles & hamstrings are the reason why the Spurs haven't won the west since '07.

  I could definitely see a scenario where Pierce could help the team as much or more off the bench.  As I have said previously Red Auerbach would absolutely consider bringing one of his top five players off the bench, did so and was extremely successful doing so.  Your top five players don't need to start, they need to finish.  There is plenty of evidence for this kind of move throughout NBA history including some very successful recent history with Popovich doing it in San Antonio and Jackson doing it in L.A.

  It would put a guy who can create shots for himself and others in the game at all times(along with Rondo).  It balances your rotation.

  If we want to see different results we have to try something different.

If anyone would naturally slide to a bench role at this point, it would be Ray.  Ray has already fallen naturally into the role of bridging between the starters and the bench, and he seems to be losing some of his edge.  But even with Ray this is questionable.  No one currently on this team has earned a chance at starting at this point.  Maybe Green will in preseason, though it's hard to envision that, considering the way Pierce played this last season.  But, really, it's all too obvious that most of these whizbang scenarios for re-arranging the starting unit are really about shoehorning Green into a starting role, regardless of any and all other considerations.  For some reason, Jeff Green has a bigger fan following than Doug Flutie.  If anyone on this team has earned his way onto the starting unit, it's Big Baby, and I think we can all agree that Baby has a lot to prove before that happens. 

T he appropriate scenario is for Rivers to do what he did in 2009-11;  enforce reduced minutes for the Big Three, as starters.

If PP or Ray will agree to it, then I think It'd be a good idea. That's easily 6th man of the year worthy. The problem is Pierce has an ego. I think, that his mind, benching him is as crazy as putting MJ at 6th man. Hopefully Danny and Doc can persuade otherwise. I'd love to see Jeff Green starting - We gave up one of the best defensive centers in the league for him. He's talented, and has a 20 PPG potential.

For some reason, Doc will not sit Pierce for 6 mins per quarter for the first two quarters. And unfortunately, that's the issue.

So for the sake of ego, sure, we can start him and take him out during the first break but why bother with the charade? Is it for the media ... "PP has started for the C's for > x years" type of announcement?

And then, I really don't see Ray Ray, as any more than a souped up Eddie House in the years to come. He'll become more and more, a serviceable shooting guard but with less star power as time goes by, much like Reggie Miller post '99.

No way our best and most consistent player over the last decade comes of bench. Pierce has plenty left in his tank. I think he will have another 18-19 ppg season with high fg,ft and 3pt percentage.

we dont need to bench pierce, we just need green to live up to his potential and be efficient off the bench...that way, Pierce can be fresh for the 4th quarter in close games when he needs to be clutch...

If pierce is well rested in those games against the heat, we likely have a different outcome as he wouldnt be as gassed
