Why'd Doc recently sign a 5 year 30 million deal?

I think that if this team wants to "ease" the rebuilding process and get back to contention quickly once the big 3 retire, then retaining Doc plays a BIG part in that..

You have a Coach whom is well respected in the league whom has a system that has brought his team to the finals twice and won a championship with it...thats what will help lure Free agents to Boston...I really think that the rebuilding process wont be as painful if Doc/danny handle it right...more like reloading slowly

I think he signed because he loves the franchise, his players and as someone else said,because it's a boat load of money that will set him up for the rest of his life.

However, I also buy into the OP's suggestion that there may be some things we don't know about as far as possible future players coming here.

We'll see if Dwight re-signs with the Magic. If he doesn't, I wouldn't be suprised to him land in Boston.

Doc is loyal but he also wants to win. I think there are two possibilities re the future of the team and the players:

1. There may be knowledge of guys who want to come here, like Howard, or

2. The management has said they will pay the price to build a winner and Doc has confidence in that.

Let's be honest though, with Rondo, Green, Pierce, DWest and Bradley as a young core, you are one big signing and a few small signings or trades away from being very competitive.

So I'm not so sure that Danny, Doc, Wyx and team see a drastic decline and a major rebuilding process on the immediate horizon.

I mean, if you could:

1. Sign Aaron Gray
2. Trade Baby, a re-signed Krstic and a 1st for a good young off guard - JR Smith? 
3. Draft a good young athletic PF
4. Sign another good, vet PF with your mid level( Carl Landry?...

We are in contention next year, big time.

First sentence I completely agree with.

The second sentence I couldn't disagree with more strongly.

That's probably correct Nick re the second statement, but I also posted this further down in the post:

As you mention I doubt there is any tampering going on. But I do think #2 immediately above is true - and I also do believe that Wyc & Co. have gotten a taste of winning, are committed to creating a winner in Boston and they will open up the bank to pay players the max they can to get them here.

I think in the end that while Doc is getting a lot of money, he probably also believes he will not suffer another "brutal" rebuilding process during this 5 year run, if he stays the full five..

And I agree with that assessment - I think we're on our way to being rebuilt already. I can't say we will immediately be perennial favorites - but I think we are not far away from being seriously in the mix as we rebuild around Rondo, Green, Bradley, DWest, etc.

I think we'll need some decent luck, one possible home run acquisition, and a few other nice little moves, draft picks and we'll be on our way again.

I think that is certainly a big reason. 

I also take him at his word that he felt loyalty to this team and organization, and he genuinely enjoys working for this front office.

I think Doc is one of the guys who really does believe in loyalty, and I think he knows that whether they are winning or not, this management group has been in his corner the entire time he has been here, and he knows that they will continue to be in his corner. 

I think he realizes that is a rare thing in the NBA, pro Sports, and business in general.  So, other than his family (which apparently were all in favor of him staying there), there just would have been little reason for him to leave.

This organization gives him the freedom and flexibility to live his life.  They let him take days off to see his family, and they support him in it. 

Sure, he could probably go to the Heat, or Lakers, or some other team that has a better outlook over the next 5 years, but he is smart enough to know that those are really no-win scenarios, and even if he does have success, the chance of him having the support he has from management here is very slim.

Well, there's a difference between "knowing" and "targeting."

I mean, Danny obviously doesn't KNOW that he's going to pull off a trade for Dwight, but there's nothing to keep him from saying to Doc that he's a player they'd like to pursue aggressively.  Danny could certainly have told him that they were going to *target* Dwight or CP3 or whoever, that doesn't mean anything in terms of tampering unless they're reaching out to the targeted player.

In any case, I'm sure Danny and Doc have had more than a few conversations about where the team is headed over the next few years, and sure seems like Doc's on board.

My thoughts are because he likes the rondo challenge.  He is friendly with the big 3 and really appreciates how great they are (doc played for years remember).  Lastly it shows stability for the celtics, this will help land good free agents.

why?  to torture everyone who thinks the team needs a change in coaching to get the most of the talent we currently have.
