Doc Rivers recently signed a 5 year 30 million year deal. He told everyone who wanted to set back so he could spend time and visit his family and watch his son play.

But him and Danny did make a deal so to make Doc stay i really think theres somthing there not telling us and there could be a huge thing thats going down to make Doc want to stay!

What do you gusy think?? You agree?

Maybe it is because 7 million a year is a ridiculous amount for a coach and after this doc can retire to his family rich as hell?

how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck was chris bosh?

I think it's a combination of loyalty to the franchise + a ton of money.  I don't think there were any other guarantees made.

From the Celtics perspective, I think Danny likes Doc both in a contending role and as the coach of a rebuilding team.

My question is why wouldn't any player or coach want to join the most storied franchise in the history of professional basketball? We have the most championships and the most players in the hall of fame. Why not join in to add to the legacy?

It's fair to say Doc would command a million dollar payday as a network analyst, but it pales in comparison to the kings ransom he just signed for.

Ownership has been more than willing to accommodate his family junkets (although I wonder who pays for the private jets), and his kids are old enough to travel and meet him halfway. The marriage works, but like any union in sports winning is the common denominator, which may explain the length of his contract. As Wyc put it 'we're always ready to open our wallets'. Therefore it's not out of the realm to think this franchise wants to remain in contention past next season.

Don't see Doc compromising his track record for the sake of rebuilding. He has an ego too. When his tenure is all said and done he will be the second winningest coach in franchise history, and he knows what that will mean in Celtic folklore ... a theology he's fully embraced.

Yup, Danny wanted Doc long term. Doc demanded the contract his recent success demands along with enough years to take him through a few years rebuilding.

With the lockout, plenty of time to watch his kid play.

I don't take coaching contracts too seriously in professional sports.

Just because Doc is signed for 5 more years doesn't mean he'll coach for 5 more years.

Coaches resign in the middle of contracts all the time (Rick Pitino, Don Nelson, Jerry Sloan come to mind).

And coaches get fired in the middle of contracts all the time, even with multiple years still left on the contract (Larry Brown with 4 years left for the Knicks, Jim O'Brien with 3 years left for the Sixers, Eddie Jordan with 2 years left for the Sixers, and just about every other coach who has ever been fired too come to mind).

It's just a small sign to other players that the team is committed to Doc and his style (for now at least).

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
To answer your question,
he basically signed because you really can't turn down that kind of money.

It works for both parties because it is showing a sign of loyalty after the Perkins PR disaster.
It lets guys like Cp3 and Dwight know that the franchise is  serious about the near future and ready to win NOW.
Players love Doc and the security involved with a situation that has a strong head coach.

Picture this:
2012 Dwight is a free agent, listening to offers.
Doc shows up at his front door with Rondo, Jeff Green, Paul Pierce, Ray and KG (who've just re-signed for small minimum contracts), and a speech about winning straight away and in the future once the big 3 are long gone.
Doc is a big part of that sales pitch to any potential Celtics player.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

He's a coach, it doesn't matter.  He can leave anytime, it's not gonna hurt our cap space.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

I think there are certainly some considerations they know about that the public is not privy to, (which excites me a bit), but it's also the love of the team, his relationship with Danny, the chance to coach three All-Stars to their retirement, the possibility of (maybe) coaching his son, and it's just plain a load of moolah. ;)

Yeah, other than some initial frustration by Pierce, I can't remember a single player ever griping about Doc Rivers, or doing anything other than singing his praises.  IIRC, Ray and Pierce both made mention of Doc's return as being key to their re-signing last offseason.

If Doc walked, he would have had his pick of countless head coaching gigs.  But, it seems he recognized how good he has it here, even if and when the team does go through a rebuilding process.  He and Danny seem to work very well together; sure seems like there's a ton of mutual respect between them.  He knows that ownership will spend money when it's called for.

Doc also seems to be very much a guy that *gets* and respects that tradition, and who *gets* how important the C's are to Boston.

So, he resigned to work for a great franchise, to work with players he loves, to work with players who love him, to work with a GM that he respects and who respects him, and to work with great owners.

Oh, and for a metric butt-ton of cash.

Sounds like a good deal to me!
