Any chance of us getting Varejao? A S&T + picks?

Irving doesn't seem like a #1 pick... although I guess there's no one that does.  I think they should take Derrick Williams and then package 4 and Hickson for Westbrook.

no... there are definitely ones that are definite #1 picks. lebron, griffin... you could argue oden if he didn't get hurt. it's just a weak draft. irving hasn't even played a full season and i'm not convinced he's really healthy at all.

I see it as a good move for Cleveland, based on what I hear about D. Williams and K. Irving.

More importantly for the near term prospects for the Celtics.... what's this about Rip potentially headed to Chicago after a buyout?  That would be great for CHI, terrible for BOS...

It seems like a trade Belichick would like if he were GM of Minni.  Trade the second pick for the 4th and 8th.  It works in football I think, not so sure about basketball.

If Minni felt they could get who they want with the 4th pick then I guess I see it.  They maybe use the 8th in a trade.  It could work out.  Drafting is a crap shoot so it could go either way.

It is a fire sale for Detroit.  Sad to see.

I love the part about getting the two best players.....

25 mil is a lot.  Does anyone know the largest buyout yet on record?  Googling...

Is Derrick Williams worth $25 million and the #4 pick (Enes Kanter?) in the draft?  That's essentially what this would come down to.

At the same time, I understand Cleveland's reasoning.  They're not going to be able to sign free agents, and they don't have a lot of young assets.  Getting both Irving and Williams would be a good way to jumpstart rebuilding.
Don't forget it also allows them to trade Hickson which would probably get them a pretty darn good SF or SG.
See, that's confusing. If they're also going to need a SG, why not just keep Hamilton? You're going to eat most of his salary anyhow.

Chris Webber -- I am thinking close to $40 million.

My guess is Chris Webber.  He got bought out of something like the last $30 million of his contract.  The Vin Baker one was big, too, although that was almost a legal settlement.

Terrible trade for Detroit. They give up the #8 pick and Hamilton--for what? Rip only has two years remaining on his contract. Next season, that contract will be expiring, and have real value on the trade market.

Cleveland should be looking to go all in to get the top 2 picks in the draft, though. If Minnesota is willing to give up the #2 (they shouldn't), I'm sure Gilbert will figure out a way to get it done.

Cleveland can trade Baron Davis for that no.2 pick....Kahn gets the "veteran" he is looking for who also happens to be a PG. Perfect match. ;) ;D

Clever -- I hope they pull it off. I'd love to see Irving and D.Williams on the same team.

They'd have Varejao too. Nice trio to build around.

Yeah i like it too. Why not use their trade exception for this if they are going to loose it anyway.

Detroit just wants to save $$$.  They probably figure the draft pick will just get them a project player who they will have to pay way more $$$ than he is worth 'cause it's such a weak draft.

No rookie on a lottery pick contract, no Rip Hamilton for the next few years, open roster spots for cheaply paid veterans = lots of saved moula for the Pistons.

I'd honestly rather have 4 and 8 then 2.  The odds of getting a great player are probably just as good, plus you get an extra player that could develop into something.

Nbadraft.net has 4 as Enes Kanter and 8 as Kawhi Leonard, I think that is better then Derrick Williams for a team that just needs a lot of bodies and I firmly believe Derrick Williams is far from a sure thing.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip
