Not sure what all the lottery talk is about, unless of course they do let him walk and not trade for some value (most likely a package of second and third tier starters). I mean, look at how Denver made out--set up pretty good with youth and quality role players. Still made noise in the West. Why not Orlando?

There's a big difference though.  Dwight Howard's the best center in the league, while Carmelo is a top 3 SF.  There is no one that the Magic can receive in a trade for Howard that will allow them to stay as competitive as they are now.  Carmelo was replaceable while Howard is simply not.  I really think their best bet is to try to wait and hope to resign him and if not try to sign and trade him.
I understand your argument, but where did having the best center in the league get Orlando? A first round exit, just like Melo and the Knicks.
Where did he get Orlando before that?
Howard + Magic = 0 rings
1 man can't do it alone in this league.

Oh not at all, but what makes more sense? Trading Howard or trying to build around Howard?
do it

From Orlando's standpoint, definitely rebuilding--but they gotta convince Howard to stay. That's the problem Cleveland had with Lebron--they had 7 years to give him what he needed to win rings but it wasn't enough. Same with the Magic--they've made moves and tried to improve the team, have a good coach, but the still the same results.
Now suppose the Heat win it all this year, which I personally favor them to do (hate saying that)--don't you think that light is going to click off in Howard's head? Get to another team with a couple first tier starters and make a run at it. Orlando is in no shape to bring in two guys like Miami did. So he ends up making plans with Chris Paul to both sign in the same place and copy the Heat's model. Otis Smith has made some questionable decisions, but he's not stupid and is not going to take the chance that Orlando will be the next warmer version of Cleveland.
He's gonna have to make a decision--trade Howard before February of 2012, or run the risk of losing him with zero return. And remember, sign and trade may not be an option going into next summers free agency period...

Yup, and when you talk about going to a team with two other top tier players, the Lakers certainly fit that bill. So, how serious are the Lakers when they say Bynum is untouchable?
