Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah was fined $50,000 on Monday for directing an anti-gay slur at a fan during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, and vowed to learn from the incident.

The NBA released its decision hours after speaking with Noah, saying the fine was "for using a derogatory and offensive term from the bench."

"I think it's fair," Noah said Tuesday. "I made a mistake, learn from it and move on. That's about it."

Arnovitz: I guess that's encouraging. Does that mean we're ready for an out gay ballplayer?

Noah: No question. No question. If you look at the percentages, there have to be gay players in the NBA.

In all fairness, didn't Doc Rivers anger Bill Kennedy years ago for using what Kennedy interpreted as a gay slur while arguing a call with him? Rivers never got fined or anything, but I heard a few times that it lead to the feud he has with Kennedy, which is much worse imo for Doc and the celtics.

I guess it must be worse for the league's image for a player to yell something stupid to a stupid heckler than to have biased officiating that makes a lot of their games look fixed.

Pathetic.  Any prediction on which fringe group Stern will feel the need to pander to next?

Too bad you cant fine the heckler for most likely saying things ten times worse than what Noah said...  ::)

Once this footage aired, the league had no choice.  You absolutely have to come down on things like that in today's society, if you don't want to lose valuable sponsors.

However, if I am the league, I would be furious with ESPN.  This is the reason they have the game on a delay, and for them to actually show that puts the league in a terrible position.

Exactly.

Eject the heckler and keep civility.

C'mon, Joakim.  There are so many better insults out there. Unfortunately, none that I can use on CelticsBlog.

Well said, Chris.

However, I don't know that the league can have it's cake and eat it too.  The networks, particularly ESPN, spend their entire existence patronizing the league and it's stars...And getting 100% behind everything Stern wants to pander to at the moment...All the while ignoring the elephant in the room...The scandalous officiating.

Noah should not even come close to ever using that word, especially with that abominable hair on his head. And he called KG a mean guy? Please.

:o These are astronomical fines Kobe 100k Noah 50K. How much for the S word or R word or F word or N word? By buckling under pressure of a powerful lobbying group, a bad precedence has been set by the league. It opened up flood gate for similar pressure. It would have been better had the NBA handled this matter internally instead of unleashing the wrath on the players. I wonder how the players' union feel about this? Clearly the media and the league offices could careless about the players welfare.

On a side note: Do gays even watch sports? Almost all of the sponsorship during games are geared to hetero-males.

lol

I'm sure there's a faction who loves watching Los Nash stroke his greasy hair on those rare times his hands (or anything else of his) actually exerts anything on defense.

Totally agree with you on the precedence.  I think this is a rare area where Stern is making a mistake.  I don't think overreacting to every fringe cause helps the league's cause at all.

Seriously, if they had a way of editing every F-bomb etc on the court....The on-court interractions would sound like an edited copy of a gangsta rap CD.

Dude, your post (especially your last sentence) is pretty offensive. How could you ask a question like that? Geez.

As for the word, it is inherently derogatory. When people say the 'f' word, it doesn't really mean anything. It is just a bad word. In schools, I hear kids say the 'n' word fairly often, and although, that language certainly isn't appropriate, they are usually saying it in a friendly way (instead of 'dude' or 'man').

With all of the troubles that are going on (suicides, etc) with younger gay people, the last thing they need is for professional organizations to just let this stuff go. It is so freakin' hard growing up gay, and even though it is getting easier, it is only because people have become aware that this stuff needs to stop.

As a sidenote, I don't think Noah meant anything by it and his apology certainly seems sincere. The same goes for Kobe. It's just one of those things they have to take care of.

I think Tim Donaghy broke that story. So depends on how reliable you think that source is

Why did Lebron get fined for his slur in the press conference about the mentally challenged?
