Maybe I'm jumping the gun here, but it seems like Lawrence Frank is mentioned with every head coach opening in the league these days--Houston & Golden State being the front runners. Who will we bring in to be our "defensive coordinator"?

Larry Brown almost took the Celtics defensive specialist gig a couple of years ago, I could see him stepping in if Frank takes off for a head coaching job.

I am not sure its a given that Frank is leaving yet, but if he does, I am going to go with Mike Brown.  He is a terrific defensive coach, and might see how Frank and Thibs used the job as a jump-off point to get a head coaching job.

No, he never was never considered for the "defensive specialist gig". Doc was quoted saying that they would have gone with Brown instead of Thibodeau if they didn't trade for the Big 3, because they felt Brown was better in developing young players.

Just curious but why do you miss him so much?

Didn't we have about the same defense (Top 3 or so) without him?Not to mention we had Shaq starting at the 5 for half the season and only had Perk (who is a supposed elite defender) for only 10 games?

I think what this past season proved is that it is more the players (and specifically KG) than the defensive coach.

I was always kind of confused when Thibs was here and why people fawned over him and was wondering if Frank would receive the same treatment. Well Frank didn't and basically had the same defensive (actually better than some years with Thibs)

Or, it shows that Doc has a lot more to do with the defensive philosophy than some give him credit for.  He's not bringing in defensive specialists because he doesn't do defense;  he's bringing in defensive specialists who fit in with his preference for a style that he has credited to Dick Harter from the early '90s Knicks.

...By your last sentence, I can't tell if you know Mike Brown was already a head coach or not...I assume you mean use the Celtics' defensive coaching job to get another head coaching gig?

I would love to have Mike Brown as Doc's assistant...a good defensive minded coach.

I would love to see Mike Brown take an assistant coaching job under another top NBA Head Coach. He has huge potential as an NBA coach but he needs to refine his skills in a few areas to achieve that.

I hope he doesn't jump into another head coaching job because his career could benefit mightily from putting in a bit more time to learning his craft. He is still very young. Plenty of time and opportunities ahead of him.

Unfortunately, I don't think he'll do this. A pity.

Instead, he'll most likely continue as a mediocre head coach who is ill-suited to leading a top NBA franchise because of his abysmal in-game coaching decisions.

Yeah I don't know what kind of ego Brown has but it's gotta be pretty hard to swallow taking a job under Doc a guy who you went to 6 and 7 game series in the playoffs and who basically out coached you in both series.

Given that his name has come up as a potential replacement for Phil Jackson, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

If we get another assistant like Thibodeau, Rivers will go back to being the top assistant coach.
