A wasted 2011/2012 season, Celtics saving cap space for Dwight Howard summer of 2012 only to get rejected. You have a point-guard who can't shoot, and Celtics legend Paul Pierce on the books no body else. Whats next? Plan B is...

I think they'll have a good indication what way Howard is leaning by the end of the summer. Chris Kaman or Nene would be good fits. Sammy D would be solid (but hes probably plan D right now). But...what about Josh Smith? Young Long and Athletic. Hes not a center by any means but he can play the 4 at a solid rate. In terms of a star he would be a good fall back.

The other two, Kaman and Nene are probably our 2 most realistic fall back options.

Virtually anyone in the league.

Cap space isn't just for signing free agents. It comes in handy for trades as well.

I think Danny has a pretty good inkling that D12 is... hopeful at best. In all honesty, I don't think anyone in the front office is putting all their eggs in the D12 basket by any stretch.

I don't know how restricted free agency is going to be under the new CBA, but there are some options there. Kevin Love, Michael Beasley, Brook Lopez, and Javale McGee are possible targets if they don't sign extensions next season.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

I don't think we'll know anything new by the end of this summer.

Maybe by next year's trading deadline. Then again, maybe not.

Might not be until near the start of next summer that he begins to narrow down his choices.

I think Dwight Howard is a pipe dream at this point. I'm assuming that the league restructuring will change the way free agents sign with teams so I don't think it's fair to even speculate at this point. I would assume in all likelihood that we will not get Dwight.

Plan B -  Wade, Bosh or Bron.  Presuming their is a hard cap... you'd think the Heat would be forced to trade one of their highly paid superstars to comply, right? ... Get under the cap and force them to trade us King James.  :)

If the C's can't work out any kind of deal through trades or free agents then I think it officially turns into rebuilding.  Pierce would probably retire and Ainge would try to get some draft picks to get us in a good position.  It might take us a few years to be competitive again after that but I don't think it will be as long as a drought as the 90's and early 2000's were.  Danny Ainge is 10 times the GM Chris Wallace is.

I don't think Dwight is plan A.

I think plan A is to win this year without giving up flexibility in the future.

Plan B?

Well, after the new "hard cap" is put in place (probably somewhere around 50-60mil), and after all of 2011 is lost to a lock-out, the C's will have one of the best cap situations in the league.

The C's will have, at most (probably less), only 27mil on the books for 2012.  This will allow them to sign any max (whatever the max ends up at) free agent who will come.  Considering so few other desireable teams will have the kind of cap space we'll have, I think the C's will be just fine.

What indicitaions have we seen that D12 has any interest in Boston?  I'm not aware of anything, so at this point it's nothing but a dream.

As many have said Howard wants to land in LAL or NJN to be in a large market.  As everyone knows he's probably more about promoting himself and being in the spotlight than about winning games.  And as we saw with Melo, unrestricted FA's have a lot of leverage on where they end up.  Even if they get traded to an unwanted destination they don't need to resign there.

The only possibility I can think of is if Doc has a relationship with Howard; afterall Doc does reside in Orlando.  And they have a secret agreement for him to come to BOS; and that's why Doc is on for another 5 years.

TP,I agree with your post but i personally don't feel Dwight is a winner. In other words he hasn't proven to me he can lead a team to a championship.I know they were in the finals a few seasons ago but we all know how they got there.Besides that he's probably a good number 2 on a championship team in a role much like LBJ will play if the Heat ever win it all.
You hit on something when you mentioned Doc signing for 5 more seasons.I felt he found out something we don't know yet.Could it be Dwight Howard coming to Boston?I doubt it but anything's possible.

Plan A should be getting Marc Gasol and a more offensive minded point guard who can still pass

Plan A should be coming up with more realistic trade and free agent options.
