Per Paul Flannery :

Quote
Jermaine O'Neal needs surgery on a fractured left wrist suffered in Game 1 of the Knicks series.

It explains why he struggled to finish around the basket especially against Miami... and confirms that he is a warrior (and to think people labeled him soft all year long!). I have even more respect for JO now and just hopes he comes back next year instead of retiring this summer.
He's hasn't been able to finish at the rim in years.  I've never seen someone shoot so many jumpshots from a foot away from the rim.

There is always something hampering him.  Over his career, I agree that he plays with pain.  But he generally plays poorly when he has any kind of pain whatsoever.  If the wrist is broken, this is the most toughness I've ever seen from him.

Also explains why he might not have played as many minutes.

There are definitely varying degrees of fractures. I'm sure when they say Jermaine was playing with a "fractured" wrist, they are talking about a chip or a very, very minor one.

When I fractured my wrist, I couldn't move my whole left arm. There is no way you could play basketball, unless you just played with one arm.

I agree it shows some toughness from O'Neal. But I saw him do a lot of things with his arm that are physically impossible when you have a fractured wrist.

Apparently he's going to have surgery to repair several broken bones in his wrist.

He's never been soft in the sense of not willing to play through pain. But the guy is made of porcelain. Seriously.

both JO and Shaq were predictably injured and at this stage of their careers they are practically worthless because they simply will never be on the court.
I don't see anything predictable in this O'Neal played the entire previous regular season without any major injury.

It was a contract year.  Expect more of the same this year.

Danny essentially signed him on a one-year, double-MLE contract.

I give credit to JO for gutting it out and playing with the injury. That said, if this team goes into next year with JO and Krstic as its center rotation, it is going to be painful.

This is why I wanted Kwame Brown
Not to start, but to come off the bench
He's a very very good post defender, rebounder, shotblocker, OK offense. And most of all.... he's rarely injured

i agree with this...kwame brown is a decent reserve player....he is strong and plugs up the middle pretty good...way better than JO, shaq, or kristic, at this time.

I feel like people should be making some Jermaine O'Neal-Bill Walton comparisons.

Doesn't he have to have knee surgery as well in the offseason?

JO / Kristic is fine platoon bench center.

They don't have a starting center, backup PF. If they have Rajon Rondo / Ray Allen and West / Arroyo, their guards are fine.

Agree with everything, except I think you replace Arroyo with Bradley as the 3rd pg and potentially the 3rd sg.

I wouldn't be shocked if we bring Baby back for small money or draft a back up big and give him some run.

I feel like people should be making some Jermaine O'Neal-Bill Walton comparisons.

That'd be like comparing Tracy McGrady to Larry Bird.
