He can coach a veteran team  & he can develop new talent ( pre 2008 years). Maybe not both at the same time...but ok

Yet another reason I'm hoping we don't "blow it up".  I like Doc coaching a contending team, but as the coach of a rebuilding franchise he drove me batty.

Yeah.  I didn't pay a lot of attention to the team prior to '07-'08 (yeah, I'm one of THOSE), but I imagine his reluctance to play young players, especially rookies, has to have been extremely frustrating. 

He likes to stick with players he knows well, and that's bad for a team that wants to be shuffling around pieces, trying out different lineups, and developing young players until they find something that really works.

This is great news hopefully we can get another title or more, even after the Big Three well look back at the 'Doc Rivers era" happy to have him for the ride. This helps ease some of the recent early exit and the thought of our Big Three aging and eventually hanging it up well we have Doc hopefully to create more new memories with more hardware along the way.

Wow I must say I'm surprised, last year he was all about doing one more year, and I really thought he'd do 1 more year max.  But 5 years?  I love it.  He's a guy a lot of people like to play for and respect.  This can only mean there is some plan in place for great things.

I actually like Doc as a developmental coach. Pre-big 3, he had this team playing hard competitive basketball even when they all knew the season was a lost cause.

Who knows, maybe the reason why he made costly mistakes as a coach in the past years...was because he had one foot already out the door in hopes he could spend time with his family

Maybe the idea of security of this long tenure would help him be more focused

The team may have played hard for Doc, but they weren't all that competitive.  Much like how a lot of Phil Jackson's stuff wouldn't work with a young, rebuilding team, Doc's weaknesses in game management are exaggerated and his strengths diminished in a rebuilding situation.

Yeah I agree with this. He wasn't given many good pieces at the time and was coaching every game like it was a playoff game to me.

I don't think he ever had a team that really came up short of realistic expectations. Think about some of those teams he coached and the players that were on those teams.

Not to mention, although people try and discredit him for this he did coach the players that helped land us KG and Ray.

My thoughts exactly... During our rebuilding era, Doc was just not a good coach at all... With the big 3, and players that could actually compete, he has been pretty great.
