If Shaquille O'Neal retires this offseason that would be two contracts (Sheed is still listed as 6.7 Mil for next year) at a total of 8 million coming off the books summer of 2012.

Is there any way that Boston can move those "expiring contracts" for players at either the deadline next season, or next offseason?

I believe this was covered right before Rasheed retired.  The contract can be moved in a trade, but only prior to the player actually filing retirement papers with the league.  Once the retirement papers are filed, the contract stays with the team.

Did Sheed file his retirement papers? If not, he is still on our books since his contract was guaranteed. In that case we can either buyout his contract or trade his contract. Same with Shaq...it'll depend upon if he officially retires or not. That's my understanding....I could be wrong though.

But Sheed never filed retirement papers... or so i thought.

So if he never officially retired then Boston can trade "Him" as an expiring.

even without sheed we still have around 37 million in expiring contracts with kg,ray & jermaine i would see these coming into use for someone big then resigning ray & kev via buyout

here are the pertinent facts that i do know:

-If a player truly retires, his contract disappears and his contract neither counts against the cap nor can the player be traded

-Only players actually on the roster can be traded

-if a player is cut or bought out, either the full contract amount (if cut/waived) or the negotiated amount (if bought out) still counts against the team's cap, but because of the above bullet point, said player/player's contract cannot be traded.


Therefore, Sheed/Sheed's contract is not a tradeable asset even if it does still exist, and if shaq retires, the same goes for his contract.
