Memphis - Where would they be with ABynum?

Every one is jumping on the Marc Gasol bandwagon now-a-days, saying the trade wasn't a heist after all.  The thing is that -at the time, and to make that a fair trade - the trade should have been PGasol for ABynum.  You know, a stud for a young stud.

Hind sight is always 20/20 and MGasol is playing very well.....I still think Memphis would have been better with ABynum.  

So for all those ponduits praising the trade, I ask them this;   Where would Memphis be if they had traded for ABynum as opposed to MGasol?

I say....Memphis would been a lot scarier.  

So yes, I still say they got taken, and should thank their starts that Zebo is having a heck of a playoff run and that the project known as MGasol turned out to be a starting center.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Marc Gasol was a throw in on that trade, not the headliner.  Similar to how the lakers got Shannon Brown in the Adam Morrison trade.  It worked out really well but is more of a surprise than it was an expectation.  I don't care what Memphis is doing right here, right now, that trade is still a disgrace.  Not only for the reason that the lakers gave up nothing at the time but that it was completed weeks before the trade deadline and Memphis never shopped around to see if they could get a better deal.

Right. Marc Gasol was an absolute nobody at the time. The main pieces were kwame brown to replace Pau, and the 2 first round picks they got to help rebuild. They alo got aaron mckie and jarvis crittenton (who looked like he could develop into a good player at the time).

After all is said and done, the grizzlies could end up looking like geniues, cuz the gasol deal saved them the $ that made zbos contract palatable, got them Marc, got them the pick that became darrell arthur, and I believe 2 other picks as well (1 from the gasol deal, and 1 from trading crittenton).

I'm not so sure.  Gasol and Randolph are both free agents.  I think Gasol is an absolute must sign.  Having a good solid center in the NBA is huge.  I also think Randolph is a much better go to guy than Rudy Gay.  If you can trade Gay in a salary dump so you have enough money to resign Randolph I think you have to.  For Memphis I think you have to put Mayo and Gay on the block in the off season and see what you get.  You still have Xavier Henry on the bench who eventually is going to need minutes.

Randolph already re-signed. Battier comes off the books as well. Given how he has played, I think they absolutely re-sign Gasol.

Right. zbo already got his extension, and has made recent comments about the grizzlies resigning Marc.  If $ is short, Gay is the odd man out. Mayo doesnt have as much trade value, and has been a great scoring boost off the bench. Between darrell arthur, sam young, and Battier, they have suitable options to cover gays absence. If they can save some $ and get something good for the future by trading him, I think it'd be a smart move.
