  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
You can't give someone a flagrant on a play based on whether or not a guy was hurt because of it. You gotta do it on the merits of the play, not on whether or not a guy's elbow freakishly dislocates because he lands awkwardly.

I agree with that, and I think the refs make too many calls based on the outcome of the contact.

But if a flagrant is just "unnecessary contact", intentionally pulling a guy to the floor qualifies.  If the injury draws attention to the contact that it wouldn't've gotten otherwise, that's fine with me.

Agree, agree, and like get_banners said above, it happened well away from the ball, and continued after the ball was out of bounds.

Even if he didn't intend to injure Rondo, it still was one of the cheapest plays I have seen Intent doesn't matter. He knows better than to intentionally tangle like that with a smaller player. Wade has been around long enough to know that when you act like that you can injure someone.

Artest didn't aim to injure either but he was suspended.

Congrats Wade, you have over taken Derek Fisher as the player I would most like to see injured.
Back to wanting Joe fired.

dirty dity stuff.. its not just the hook, its the leg sweep.. thats just danerous.. i think any additional calls would have been tough during the game.. he can say "im not a dirty player" all he wants but he knows what he did

Wade's play was cheap but not dirty.  He pulled Rondo down with him on purpose, but he wasn't trying to injure him; the injury was a fluke consequence of the fall.  No suspension, but I wouldn't complain if they gave him a flagrant.

Exactly how I feel. If Rondo didn't get hurt, nobody would've said boo.

Actually the NBA is allowed to review the play based upon what happened to the player and if he got injured

Artest was definitely trying to hurt Barea. Not injure, hurt

The other thing that came to mind after seeing the replay, besides the "oh no, Rondo is out for the rest of the playoffs," was "oh wow, Wade lost his composure and is playing desperate. The C's still got it. Please, Rondo, come back and win this game and series."

My issue is that he hooked him and then continued to throw him down with force ... was definitely due to frustration because Rondo had just knocked the ball away.  I believe he deserves to be suspended, because he let his frustration get the better of him and hurt Rondo in the process, but I don't think there is a chance in the world that he will get suspended.

The hook and tangle and "accidental" throw-down aren't the issue..the fact that they all happened well after the ball was out of play is the issue. Wade lost the ball, got frustrated, and hooked and took down Rondo. He absolutely should be suspended because it was completely away from the ball, but I doubt anything happens. Wade is really revealing himself to be a dirty player in this series.

I think it's time to trot out Troy Murphy or Von Wafer for 5 mins next game, and wait until Wade takes a drive to the basket. Then, just give him a polite elbow to the chest. As he comes down, aid him down from his fall by landing on top of him, preferably on an ankle or at least across his legs.

if it was an isolated incident, i'd agree that it was no big deal...

but wade did this very thing several times in the game and it eventually is going to (did) hurt someone.

early on when pierce fouled wade, you can see wade deliberately reach for, and pull down pierce, trying to be physical after the play.  pierce ran away with his arms up because he knew any retaliation would remind the refs of the game 1 confrontation when pierce was seen as the aggressor.

i'm not a wade hater either.  at least not until tonight.

here's the rule:
Quote
"Flagrant Fouls: These fouls are considered unnecessary and/or excessive. There are two types of flagrant fouls, 1 and 2. A flagrant 1 is unnecessary contact. This is usually when a defensive player swings and makes hard contact with the offensive player or makes hard contact and then follows through. A flagrant foul 2 is unnecessary and excessive contact. This usually has a swinging motion, hard contact, and a follow through. Both fouls carry a penalty of two free throws and the team that was fouled retains possession. A flagrant foul 2 also results in an ejection of the player committing the foul. A player also is ejected if he commits two flagrant foul penalty 1’s."

There is absolutely ZERO doubt that this was unnecessary contact. None. The ball was out of bounds. So this should at the very least be upgraded to a flagrant 1. It can definitely be argued that it was both unnecessary AND excessive, but that is more of a judgment call. But zero doubt it was at least a flagrant 1.

They can review any play if they think it could be upgraded, can't they?
