As many questions I have about this draft. I'll say this.

How the heck does the whole NFL pass on Mallett two and a half times. I would not be suprised one bit if he is the best QB from this class, because he is right now the best.

And it's really not even close. If the Pats were the ones pushing all the Drug issues behind the scenes that would be pretty funny.

Take a look at Brady's numbers at Michigan. Toma and Ryan both played two years where they got 350 attempts per year.

Tom put up solid numbers. Tom was 428 comp, and 690 att for 5,200 yards 35 TD to 18 picks. 62 Comp%

Ryans two years 491 comp, 814 att, for 7,490 yards, 62 touchdowns to 19 picks. 60%  comp.

If that's not enough he's almost six foot seven, has a Rocket arm and throws the touch passes perfectly, the only real critsism is he has blew it at the end of a couple games, but won the vast majority.

I have no problem with this pick. And the Pats do a great job of getting The Best QB's in the NFL late in the draft.

I have to admit, I like Mallett ... always have. Bill has a great eye for potential, and I think this kid has a ton of it, and I was surprised to see him go so late. Time will tell how he responds in the Patriot environment, or if he'll remain here, but at this point, I'm a bit excited about this QB and what he's got to prove.

 And how crazy is this.

Most of us have thee the Brady six.

Guess how many QB'a taken before Mallett.

 Yep. Six.

Cam, Locker, Ponder, Gabbert, Dalton, Kapernick.

Unreal Mallett is better that all of them.

I think the other criticism is that he had the slowest times for a QB in 22 years at the combine.

Read somewhere the suggestion that an agent who had chased hard after him and not got him, but ended up with another competing QB in the draft, was the one badmouthing him.

Also something cryptic that seemed to suggest he had confessed past marijuana use to one team's executive--who then did not believe him.

I'm not ready to dismiss your thesis.

It's another stupid move for the future at the expense of the present. Only the future never comes because we keep trading picks for the future. I wish we could play games in the future. Too bad they're played in the present.

I don't mind this pick so much. It brings a very viable future qb in (or as Eja would say, a trade for a pick in the future). He definitely is solid and dropped quite a bit.

What I don't get, though, is how we didn't take a chance on Bowers. With all of these picks, we had the opportunity to really hit a homerun at a postion of [desperate] need and we just kept skipping over him.

I know we are all supposed to back up Bill in the draft because he is apparently a draft value genius, but I prefer him more on the field. Just take the obvious pick once in a while.

I think you may be giving BB a little bit too much credit here.  Apparently, just about every scout and personnel guy that was being talked to was trashing Mallet's character.  This isn't all a seed that BB planted; this is all stuff based in reality.  There are the drug concerns, but apparently he's also a world-class jerk.  I think a lot of teams had some legitimate concerns that go far beyond anything that BB or the Patriots might have planted.

At the same time, there's a lot to like about Mallet's potential, and BB is willing to gamble on him.  This could work out very well, if BB can get through to him.  Belichek can be complimented for seeing beyond the character issues if this works out, but I don't think he can be credited with starting them in the first place.

I'm not a Pats fan, but this is a great pick for those of you who are.  I watched a fair bit of Mallett in college.  He filled in really well as a freshman at Michigan when Henne got hurt for a few games, then got screwed over when there was a coaching change and they wanted a running qb (which certainly doesn't describe Mallett.)  There weren't many reports of behavior issues during his freshman year at Michigan -- they largely started to pop up when/after he transferred to Arkansas.  When he was at Michigan, I was really excited about him.  I don't remember a qb who looked better as a freshman than he did.  He threw beautiful deep balls to Mario Manningham seemingly every game.  If Lloyd Carr hadn't retired, Mallett probably would have been the best qb in Michigan history, no offense to Tom Brady (or Elvis Grbac, who's still my #1.)

At Arkansas, he started to put some better touch on his short passes.  Aside from his rumored attitude issues, which I'm willing to bet Belichek can fix, his biggest area work is with his footwork.  Once he moves in the pocket, he doesn't get reset, and then tries to throw with only his arm, and his accuracy suffers.  I also didn't find him to be the most convincing using the playaction (which Petrino called for almost every dropback.)  He also had real trouble with the center exchange at Michigan.  Some of that was because Michigan's starting center got hurt that year too, and was thus on the center, but some had to be on Mallett.  I didn't notice that problem continuing at Arkansas, so that looks like something he's fixed.

My expectations for Mallett are to start the year as third-string, but to take over the #2 qb spot before the season is over, and then be #2 for certain in 2012.  (Depending how long the lockout lasts, however, he might be #3 all year because Hoyer has enough of a headstart with the offense.)  Of course you don't want Brady to get hurt, but you'll soon have a backup qb who can win games, instead of not lose them.  Depending how long Brady keeps playing, Mallett may be able to take over and be your long-term starter after he goes, or maybe he'll leave in FA/be traded before that happens.  I don't think you'll see Belichek take another qb in the draft as long as Mallett and Brady are both here.

I like this pick and then I don't.  Had he not drafted 2 RB's at 56 and 73, I would like it.  I understand picking one.  Green-Ellis is a restricted free agent and Taylor, Faulk and Morris all are a year older.  This team has too many holes to be wasting picks for the now.  Yes, Mallett will help in the future, but he won't help them now.  If Green-Ellis is resigned then neither of these two backs will get many reps.  It just seems like too many picks that won't help them fix their problems now.

TP for the analysis and insight.
One thing to keep in mind is that Hoyer is on the last year of his contract.  I think a realistic scenario is that Hoyer gets traded in the preseason/ early season to a team that needs a QB.  Not sure how much he will fetch in return (maybe a 3rd rounder?).  Of course, this will all depend on Mallett's progress during training camp.  If it looks like he is a longer term project, then he'll be kept as #3 and Hoyer will walk at the end of the year.

BB can't draft any more. I don't really care Mallet might be good 4 years from now. We need a pass rush last year. And the year before.

He used to draft starting QBs in the 6th and 7th rounds when there was no need. Now he takes them in the 3rd. And misses. Rohan Davey (4th) Kevin O'Connell and now Mallet.

He also drafts DB excessively and misses on most of them too. Tyrone Wheatley. Donald Butler. Jason Wilhite. Gus Scott. Dexter Reid. Now Ras I.   Hey Belichek. You'd be amazed how good Kyle Arrington can be if you can rush the passer. Oh but you can't.

I'd be surprised if Hoyer has any trade value, with or without the Pats having Mallett.  You rarely see teams trade for young backups without starting potential, which is what Hoyer is.  I didn't know that Hoyer was on the last year of his contract, but that makes this pick make all the more sense.  This way your primary backup this year (Hoyer) can already know the offense, and there won't be a learning curve in 2012 for the new backup (Mallett.)  Only way I see Hoyer not being on the Pats this season is if the lockout ends Monday, and Mallett shows very quickly he can beat Hoyer for the backup job in training camp.  I find both unlikely.

And i wouldn't want anyone else coaching my team as a Pat's fan, i think he's one of if not the best coach of all time.

What gets to me and EJA is that when you make legitimate criticisms of him, you get met with a wave of "you can't question him, he's BB" posts.

Being a great coach does not make you immune to criticism
