NBA "tough guy" does not equal fight. Not even the same equation.
It's not, IMO, a case of "NBA players talk a lot but don't want to fight".
Instead, it's "NBA players talk a lot which has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH FIGHTING."
To say someone is all bark and no bite connotes that they were barking about something, then when called upon to follow up did nothing.
Instead, in the case of the really good NBA trash talkers, they were talking a lot and BACKED IT UP RUTHLESSLY ON THE COURT.
Huge difference in my opinion. I'm sorry for all the caps, but that's just a really silly line of thought to me. If a basketball player talks mad trash to his opponent on the court, proceeds to stomp a mutt-hole in him as a player, and is uninterested in fighting...he more than backed up his bark IMO. To think that fighting has any bearing at all on the bark/bite continuum is as ridiculous to me as someone calling Mohammed Ali all bark/no bite because he never proved he could hit a jump-shot in Foreman's eye.
Eh, I think your metaphor is lacking a bit, although it is pretty snappy.
We'll never know what is actually said on the court, but if a guy questions another guy's manhood, calls him a coward (or another 5 letter word meaning coward), and as a result gets into a confrontation which he than retreats from, I think in a lot of ways that's sending conflicting messages.
I think your view of what constitutes 'tough', and the intended meaning of 'tough' in the view of actual basketball players is a bit more optimistic and idealoigcal than practical. These guys aren't brought up to prove their manhood by soundly boxing out a guy and getting a contested rebound, or being able to hit a fadeaway baseline jumper, and when they question a guy's manhood, they're not questioning whether or not he's a 85% freethrow shooter.
I think MGent's post speaks more to the point of KG and the whole notion of 'tough'.
Noah is, and always has been KG without the offense. Both of them are pests who like to get under the skin of opponents, and neither has any interest in an actual fight.
Hahahaha you can't compare KG to Noah they aren't even close. Shouldn't even be used in the same sentence. Who says KG has no interest in an actual fight?
Well...I do.
KG hasn't gotten beyond a shoving match in 5 years..and the only real 'fights' he's been in we've heard about have been with puny young white guys.
KG is a lot of good things, but..dude is kind of a all bark no bite kinda person when it comes to actually fighting..which i'm fine with. I'd rather he talk with his play and not get suspended.
Don't you think KG would rather have the same thing. I mean if you're talking games right now I don't know how you can judge someone's will to fight. There's a 100% chance of getting suspended. For example I'd consider running into the stands to punch people out and not playing for 70 games plus playoffs because some guy was trying to start a fight with you is more stupid than tough.
As for guys on the court, they absolutely provoke guys in an attempt to get them thrown out. Just because KG doesn't "bite" doesn't mean he doesn't want to or wouldn't if there wasn't 50 cameras on him.
There is no way I'd call every player in the NBA (except a couple dumb guys like Artest, S-Jax) a fake tough guy because they've never responded to a guy getting in his face, talking trash, or giving him a shove on TV. You're trying to say none of those guys would end up in a fight if someone who wasn't in a position to get them kicked out of a game got in their face and provoked them in a private setting? Did Tony Allen suddenly change from fake tough guy (who's never into a fight on the court) to real tough guy this year because of OJ Mayo? Or Delonte West (same thing) because he blindsided Wafer?
Do you really think fans are aware of every fight every player has been in?Basically my question is how are you qualified to say KG has no interest in a fight by watching him at his job for 15 years? I can't say for a fact that yes KG would oblige if someone he knew was trying to start a fight with him somewhere other than his workplace, but considering his personality and demeanor I'd lean in that direction before I'd agree with you and say he'd run away or that he'd just say "MF" and wait for 3 guys plus a ref to hold him back.
Maybe. The only documented fights I know of that KG has been in has been with 2 white guys who would get owned by Danny Ainge with one hand behind his back. Basically every other player in the league says KG doesn't back up his trash talking, and watching him play, when a confrontation turns physical, KG is much more tactical than reactionary in most instances, even when he is being aggressive. KG does seem very, very aware of the consequences of fighting, and I don't think it is a coincidence that at most he's been suspended 1 game for elbowing Q-Rich.
Now, I'm not calling KG a coward, or anything of the sort. I am only saying that during games, KG talks a big game, but doesn't seem to follow it up when challenged physically, and that's kind of irrefutable.
