Shaq or JO as the starter??

When Shaq comes back to the lineup, do we leave JO as our starting C, or does Shaq get the nod?
Seems like JO has a lot of confidence and is meshing well with The big 4. Not sure if Shaq is an off the bench player and if he would mesh well with Baby and the sheepish Jeff Green.

I think Shaq would be of better use to the bench. He'll give the bench better stability, and will balance better the first unit and second unit.

He looked good coming off the bench the other day when he played 6 minutes. Also, it make bench PG play that much easier.

I wonder if it is a bad idea to get Shaq's body warmed up and then have him sit for 20-30 minutes.  I'll bet his body is better suited to playing off of the pre-game and halftime warm-ups.

I like Shaq starting and JO closing with the starters. 

I don't particularly love Shaq and BBD together.  Both are rather slow and while Shaq can block some shots, he doesn't make up for BBD's height like JO would. 

And we all already know that Shaq fits very, very well with the starters and would help us get out to fast starts. 

I like JO closing games, though, with the starters.  He provides better defense and can hit free throws at a 75+% clip.

I'm pessimistic about his return but...

If they were both healthy, Shaq. Means that between JO and KG you'll almost always have a strong 7 foot defensive prescence in the game.

I am also pessimistic about Shaq's return, but I like him with the starters.  I think he can help establish Rondo's game early by converting easy attempts off point guard penetration.  This gets Rondo in attack mode and well we all know the adage, "as rondo goes so goes the Celtics."

On the flip side JO brings height, rebounding and shot blocking to the second unit.  Also, for this next round match up, he can also step out and guard Bosh or Z.  This would otherwise be BBD and I don't think he matches up well with either of those assignments.   

However, you gotta put your best 5 out there to close, so if I was Doc, JO is closing at C.

I'd probably start Shaq, just because I think it's more manageable.

If they are committed to using Green as a small PF, then Shaq off the bench might work well, just worried about the health issue.

I guess Shaq because that seems like what is right, but seeing how they both would only be playing 22 minutes or so per night, they will both see plenty of time with the starters.

Agreed. Shaq meshes well with the starters, protects the paint/lays the wood, helps to establish the tone of the game.

Can't start Shaq with him missing 3 months and coming back in the 2nd round of the playoffs (hopefully) against the Heat. JO is performing well for us right now with the starting unit and has been gaining chemistry with the starting unit. If you start Shaq, you risk getting a rusty/ineffective Shaq and disrupting JO's flow as he hasn't really played much with the 2nd unit since he came back.

You can still stagger their minutes so that both JO and Shaq get a lot of minutes with the starters. JO plays around 20-24 minutes a game and Shaq will probably play around 15 a game if he comes back. Rondo/Ray/Pierce play in the high 30s/low 40 minute range and KG in the mid-30 range.

I don't know how practical it is, but I'd start Shaq for the first 3 - 4 minutes of each quarter, with JO getting the bulk of the remaining minutes.  Shaq's going to be most effective in short spurts, and JO would still get a ton of time with the starters.

Not only that, but it keeps him loose after pre-game and halftime warmups. That said, at the very beginning I'd rather have Shaq play about 12 minutes, 6 to start the 1st and 3rd, and that's it. I think him getting cold was a factor in him pulling up lame vs Detroit.
