Houston just let Rick Adelman go.  If Doc retires after this year would you rather have Adelman, Lawrence (the presumptive heir?) or someone else going forward?

Edit: the Adelman story: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6384752

First off, I'd like to see Doc for one more year.  I think this team can be competitive (and is built to be competitive with its current salary structure) for another year, and for the sake of continuity, I think Doc is the guy to do it.

Second, I'm not sure who should be coach after Doc, but am pretty sure it won't be Adelman based on age alone.  IMO, it really depends on where the team stands in the summer of 2012.

I would hope that Doc takes 2012 off, in the lockout season, then comes back to coach here again after his year off.

Doc already stated clearly that if KG and Pierce are here, he will be, too, but I personally would love to get Doug Collins, (I know he probably won't be available), and Adelman's not bad. ;)

McHale's name has been mentioned too. Great Celtic Player but not sure how he would do as a coach.
Hope Doc stays one more year with the Big 3 given no lockout.

I've already posted this . . . should be merged with the other thread, which had pretty much the same discussion.

McHale was a pretty solid coach in Minny, but the consensus was that he really didn't want to coach.

I'd love him on the sidelines here.  He's pretty much exactly what we would need to follow Doc.  Everyone else would be a second choice, IMO.

To me, Adelman is one of those coaches whose teams always over-perform.  Him and Nate McMillan.  *IF* Doc doesn't come back, i'd be intrigued to see what he could do...

Doug Collins: The only coach in the history of basketball that couldn't win a title with Michael Jordan.

Actually, he was MJ's third NBA coach.  In his third and last season, they lost the ECF to the champ Pistons, the very team who knocked out the C's that year.  Under him, the Bulls went one round further in the playoffs every season.  No shame in that.

MJ must have thought something of him to hire him as the Wiz coach as well.

Collins can coach, and did a pretty solid job in Philly this season as well.

Wow ... you blame that on Collins?!? in 2002 Jordan had arthroscopic knee surgery right after the All-Star break, had a very mediocre supporting cast, and was followed by injuries to Haywood, Hamilton, and White, and preceeded by an extended injury to their No. 1 pick, Kwame Brown. I give Collins a tremendous amount of respect for trying to keep that team going after all the crap it had to deal with that year ... it was started under shadow and just got worse! Through two seasons with a very so-so cast, he still improved their record from .308 to .451. He has an amazing knowledge of the game, and is very under-rated IMHO.

Adelman is a fantastic coach .. look up his numbers sometime. He would be very very different from Doc, but It would be a good change IMO.

Obviously, Doc coming back would be the best case .. but Adelman is easily the best coach out there. Much better than Frank. (And I DO like Frank).

The following quotes from Adelman weren't very impressive if you ask me:

Quote
"I look at the team today," Adelman said in late February. "In 3½ years since I came here, we have only two guys left, Luis and Chuck. That's not a lot of stability. I came to coach Yao and Tracy and ended up with Luis and Chuck.

"It is kind of amazing those are the only two guys left," Adelman said. "I told them, 'This is the group we have. What are you going to make of it?' That is the same approach I have to take."

I look at the season George Karl had in Denver and hear Adelman's quote...sour grapes.

He has been the victim of very tough luck but I think he could have approached this with more accountability.

"      “I can make a trade every day if I want to, but that's not going to help us. A trade that would get us better rarely comes along. They're very difficult to find. Good trades are very difficult in our league and don't happen very often.”

Adelman was frustrating when he coached the talented Blazers, but after those days he's my non-celtic favorite coach. At Sactown and Houston he's been great, and I'd love to see him winning a title in Boston next year... only if Doc takes the year off.

I could see Adelman coaching the C's for the shortened 2012 season, in the last try of the Big 3. It would be great. Then, after winning it all, Frank would be the HC who builds the next dinasty, with the Big 3 coming from the bench and young players acquired that summer.

;D Pipe dream at its best
