I was thinking about this the other day, and a comment in another thread brought it back to the forefront of my mind.  If you could combine two NBA players, who would they be?

Rules:

1.  The two players need to be within 5 inches of one another's height, as listed on basketball-reference.com.  (This stops people from combining, say, Dikembe Mutombo with Muggsy Bogues, which would be hilarious, but not realistic).

2.  Similar to #1, the primary position of the player must be within two positions of the other player's primary position, using the traditional 1 = point guard, 5 = center scale.  In other words, a center (5) can be combined with a small forward (3), since the difference is 2.  However, a center (5) cannot be combined with a shooting guard (2).

3.  The created player automatically gets the best attributes of each of the two players, and the lesser of the two players weaknesses.

I'll go first:

Larry Bird + Bill Russell

It may not be the absolute best combination, but it's the one with the most Celtics pride.  Larry's game would be improved by Bill's athleticism, shot-blocking, defense, and even better rebounding.  I'd play Barry Brussell at the same SF/PF combination that Bird excelled at, and he'd no doubt be unstoppable.

Not very creative, I know.

KG + Dwight Howard. If Howard had KG's intensity, outside shot, post game, and passing ability he would be unstoppable. Not to mention free throw shooting

I think that's the obvious one, and maybe MJ's killer instinct in Lebron would make him leaps and bounds over everybody.  However, I don't think that Lebron adds much to MJ as a player; I almost think you'd be better off combining MJ with a guy like Kevin Love (a great shooter and a great rebounder).

You can choose either player's individual height, or can average them.

He would get more of LeBron's size.. that guy is huge. If LeBron had a post game, that would contribute as well. LeBron would learn how to close games out as well.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
Larry Bird + Lebron James = I think that's scarier than Lebron Jordan

Lebron Bird

Pros.
Ridiculous levels of Clutch - Bird
Ridiculous Shooting ability - Bird
Ridiculous Strength & Athleticism - LBJ

Cons:
Not so impressive post game.
A whole new level of D.Baggery even fans of their own teams would hate him to an extent.

Basically Larry Bird with Lebrons Athleticism.

Rondo + Ray Allen.
Cs would have the best PG in the league and would be guaranteed to win #18!

Scott Skiles' mind and Gerald Green's body.  Instant Hall of Fame potential.

Though I don't know how it works with Rule #3 since Green is the lesser player but his weaknesses were primarily mental.
