College refs know how to let players play.

College refs know how to make a call when it's a sure foul, not when a foul maybe sort of could have probably happened but might not have...well I'd better blow this thing.

College refs err on the side of non-calls instead of phantom calls, so the game has flow.

College refs don't ref as if they're in a panic.

College refs don't put themselves front and center.

College refs make mistakes but the mistakes are quickly forgotten because the game itself comes to the forefront.

College refs don't help the team that's losing as much as NBA refs, allowing blowouts without fear of losing money.

Like the NBA, there is someone in charge of officials.

For the tournament, they are told how they want games to be called.  The officials that do the best job of matching that, move on (and get more pay checks)

That's why the officiating seems to be more uniform in the NCAA.

In the NBA, those in charge are happy with the way it is.

Aside from an assorted game I usually just watch the tournament.  And in the tournament the games always seem to flow along pretty well compared to the NBA, where you can't breathe on a guy.

More fouls called during regular college season?

What is the expectation (from above as Wdleehi suggests) for refs in the tournament....fewer whistles?  What a concept!

I've seen some atrocioius refereeing this tournament and dont get me started on that debacle from the St. Johns game in the Big East tournament.

Oh because I don't think watching just the tournament is a big enough sample size to make this claim.  Just my opinion.

I'm a St John's fan, but that ending was ridiculous.

There are constant missed calls in college games despite being so much slower and more predicable than NBA games. The style of play is so much easier to ref. Passing the ball back and forth 24 feet from the rim for 15 seconds?

Perceptions often depend on the person calling the game. Because we hear national broadcasters, we don't hear homer whining during NCAA tourney games. But there are some NCAA announcers who are quick nonetheless to express their dismay over repeated bad calls.

Two teams have been eliminated by HUGE calls down the stretch... I think they're just as bad.

At making fans go "what was that, ref?!"

Oh yes.  :D

And I'm still dubious about that no-call in the last play of Morehead St./Louisville. Don't even get ME started on this tournament.

Okay I desist.  However, there's no question that in scrums under the basket the refs in the tournament are letting the action play out instead of blowing an automatic foul.

Exercise:  Watch the next tournament game and the imagine the refs are from the NBA.  Then watch broken plays or scrums under the basket or whatever, and you'll find yourself expecting a whistle.....and it won't come....so refreshing.

You mean the no-call where the shooter leaned in and the defender stayed straight up?  That was a very good no-call.  The primary difference between NCAA and NBA officials is consistency, there are no superstar calls.  They do let the games get a little more physical which should probably be addressed, but again a guy like Jimmer Fredette or Kemba Walker isn't going to the FT line just because of their names.
do it

I hate nba refs as much as the next guy but I would guess that HS refs, jr high refs and rec league refs are also better. It's easier to ref games played at a slower speed by lesser athletes.

That ref who called that bogus 5 second call on Texas certainly didnt look better than most NBA officials.
