I've got a fairly new MacBook this year.

I want a cheap printer/scanner.  I don't have lots of printing needs.

Any recommendations?

Also I want to be able to do Microsoft Office on this thing.

I hear there's also an alternative.

What do you guys use?

eja: I have a MacBook Pro, and it is seriously the best $2000 I ever spent. Not even a comparison..just a fantastic machine.

For Printers: its not worth it to even go to the store, unless you're one of those people who don't like ordering things online. Assuming you don't care..I always go to www.buy.com and just pick out the cheapest printer/scanner that fits my needs.

Per the Microsoft Office thing: Microsoft does make a mac-compatible Office program, but I like Mac's iWork programs better than Microsoft's..with the exception of Excel.

If you're like me though, and you like not spending money on stuff if you don't need to..

This title is misleading you said computer recommendations then you go on to mention Macs  ::)

Congrats on your MacBook. I have been using macs for the last 7 years and would never buy a PC again. That said, I'm forced to use one at work and use tons of spreadsheets and Word documents--stick with Office, it's pretty much the Universal program that you'll be cursing yourself if you don't have it. Nothing like working hard at home on a project, only having to redo the whole thing on office at work because the formatting was so effed that it was easier to do it over.

As far as the printer goes, be wary of buying printers on the cheap--be sure to cost out how much the replacement ink cartridges are, especially if you buy a color printer that has separate CMYK colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, back) because they can cost a fortune each. I would go on Amazon and read reviews, then base my decision on how much the catridges are and the print quality, not how much the initial price of the machine is.

I know it does have the CMYK thing, but the reviews are really good and my printing needs are pretty low.

Largely I just need to be able to do time sensitive stuff like my resume here and there

Eja, your seem like a law abiding citizen. Therefore, you shouldn't download bittorrent or utilize host cites such as pirate to download a ton of software like Office for free. Also, don't pm me for more information or give me TPs.  8)

Actually Microsoft Office is available for Mac's: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/, however, OpenOffice is a great alternative.

If you want to take it step further then you can use software like VMWare Fusion which basically creates a virtual PC on your Mac, so you can use all Windows compatible software seamlessly while you operate your Mac simultaneously. I have a Macbook Pro and it's by far the best computer I've ever owned.

I use a macbook pro. Absolutely love it. Mac office has never been the best but it works I guess. For a cheaper alternative, the pages and keynote Apple makes are really good too and they are compatible with Microsoft Office (you can save in the same file extensions).

So you can run powerpoint, excel, and word with keynote?
