I was having this debate with some buddies recently. There was no real consensus among the 6 of us (all Celtics fans). I, personally, understand the argument that he can be regarded as the best PG in the game, but I also understand the argument that he's behind the likes of Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, D Will, and maybe even another player or two. I was wondering what this blog thinks. Obviously, since the majority of posters here are Celtics fans, this may be a little biased, but I'm just curious.

Top 10. Earlier in the season he was Top 3 but his increasingly sporadic and inconsistent play has dropped him in rank in my view, he just doesent have the "it" factor right now, his inability to get a consistent jumper is going to hurt him when this team goes forward as well.

  • Rondo = Good
Let's see.

As far pure passing and running an offense goes, he's probably 2nd behind Steve Nash and just ahead of Chris Paul at this point.

...but that's not all there is to being a point guard in this league in this day and age.

So, which point guards in the league do I think are better all-around players right now?

Chris Paul
Deron Williams
Derrick Rose
Russell Westbrook

I'd put Rondo after those 4, just ahead of Steve Nash and Tony Parker.

I agree with the two previous lists. I had Rondo in the top 3 going into this year with CP3 and DWill, but the way DRose has played, he has to be ranked ahead of Rondo right now, and I think the same argument can be made for Westbrook. With Westbrook it's a little less obvious, but the guy is a flat out stud. I think 5th right now fits Rondo pretty well although I think Rondo, Westbrook, and D Will are all very close for the 3-5 debate and I could see those rankings going in any order.

Rondo is the assist leader and steal leader so it's safe to say that he is the best passer and defender or up there.   Definitely top three in those areas as he leads the league.  Shooting wise though is where he does not shine.  I would say he is in the bottom three there.

But a PG is a distributor in theory and not a big time scorer.

Westbrook's something of an inefficient volume shooter and not a great defender.

In no particular order: Paul, Williams, Rose, Nash, Westbrook, Kidd, and Parker are all better then him.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

It really depends on the criteria being used to judge the greatness. When healthy and motivated, I think Rondo and Nash are the best pass-first, floor-leading, tempo-controlling, point guards in the game right now.  However, there are a lot of great scoring point guards (e.g., Rose) out there who help their teams in different ways. I have a hard time ranking Rondo against those guys because it seems like comparing apples to oranges to me.
“Being a Celtic is, every decision you make is about the team. Every cut you make is about the team. Every pass you make is about the team. You take yourself out of it. It’s not for everyone. If you don’t want to win, don’t want to play team basketball, and it’s more about you then you’re probably not a Celtic." Doc 2010

Chris Paul and Deron Williams are half a step above him, they are both complete players. Right now, Rondo is in Nash and Rose neighbourhood. Nash lacks defense, but is a great distributor and shooter. Rondo lacks shooting ability, but is a great distributor and defender. Rose lacks defense and is not a good distributor, but he's a good shooter and a great slasher, and is like a little Lebron, so he's already a top 5 PG.

Below them, there's Westbrook, who could end being a top 3 PG if he keeps improving, Jason Kidd due to age, and Tony Parker.

Looking ahead, I wouldn't complain about having a top 3 PG. Only Paul and Williams could be considered upgrades, but even then you'd have to see if chemistry works out well.

I'm happy with Rondo as long as he practices with Ray Ray his FTs and jumpshooting, he's probably the best guard in a Celtics uniform since DJ. Furthermore, I still see him as these days Cousy, waiting for our next Bill Russell in order to dominate the league in a sixties way.

Go Celtics!!!

Wall and Westbrook are not on Rondo's level, they could be, and maybe they could be better, but right now Rondo is a better PG.

Rose is very good, a great player, but he's not a better PG. Rose is a better scorer, stronger player, but he doesn't defend or create for others like Rondo. And I know I'm biased, because I love Rondo's game and dislike the way Rose plays, but they're on a similar level.

Westbrook is no less efficient than Derrick Rose, and he's on a similar level defensively (even gets more steals per game).
