I love(d) Perk but no way is he worth more than 5 mill a year. Perk knows it too. I don't know the details of Perk's new deal so  I don't know if the OKC front office knows, too. Danny figured we could do without him and did something about it. It's a business. You can't blame Perk for looking for the best possible deal but you can't blame Danny either. It is what it is: A business.

I don't know.  In a league where an old, broken down J.O. gets $6 million per season, I think Perk is worth at least $5 million, by any measure.

It would be pretty silly of Perk to be miffed at Danny for saying an all-time top 5 center is a better player than him, but human emotions run toward the silly.

Remember how Powe blasted the team on his way out?  Then he wanted nothing more than to come back here last month.

True. But when J.O. joined us, no one could anticipate just how much health trouble he would be in. Yeah, I know, he's had multiple injuries throughout big parts of his career but Danny must've brought him in for a reason.

I guess as a GM you always have to weigh in all factors: Do we let Perkins leave for free? If we offer him too much money, how will that effect our future? With all these injuries, can we do something to upgrade our bench? Danny made the calls and brought us # 17. Alas, In Danny I Trust.

I was sad to see The Scowl leave but I am excited to have a player like Jeff Green coming off the bench. And I also think OKC will be good for Kendrick. I think the C's are resting up the Ol' Shamrock for the playoffs. If Murphy can get in (game) shape and the rest of the guys heal up, I think we will be a very  dangerous basketball team when the playoffs begin.

Well, I'd go a little higher than $5, but I had no interest in Perkins whatsoever at what OKC is paying. So I'm quite satisfied with the results of the trade.

In terms of busininess reality, it's clear that Perk is worth what OKC signed him for.

If Perk is miffed, it's probably because he keeps reading quotes from Danny that his health was a major issue, that Shaq was the better player, and that Perk wanted too much money by rejecting the lowball, CBA-mandated extension offer.

I'm sure Perk has a different view of the reality of each of those situations, and if he talks about Danny trying to look good by covering up the truth, my guess is that's what he's talking about.

I wish Danny had just said, "Listen, I made the trade that I thought was best for the team.  I was a big Perk fan, and I wish him the best."  Instead, we've gotten reason after reason about why the trade had to be made (with some of those reasons evolving over time.)  Danny has seemed to be in full-on spin mode, and I've found it a bit distasteful.  I'm sure that Perk feels the same way, since his former boss is basically taking shots at him on his way out the door.

Exactly.

i wish Danny would just shut up - every time he gives a new reason rationalizing the trade that ripped the heart out of his team, he sounds worse and worse.

please educate me about the salary realities for the Celtics right now. i understand that we have more $$ wrapped in our Big 4 than the Thunder do in their Big 2, which i suppose Perk now makes a Big 3 of sorts. But exactly what could the Celts  actually have offered Perk for an extension and would it have been enough (i don't believe much of what Ainge has to say - he's lied too much in the past).

personally, i don't think Perk leaving for more money was a foregone conclusion - sure looks to me like the guy's heart was in Boston and that he wanted to stay a Celtic and maybe lead the rebuilding effort in a few years with his buddy Rondo & Big Baby and then eventually see #43 hang in the rafters.

was Perk going to be a restricted free agent or unrestricted ?

Different players have different value for different teams. Perkins can add grittiness and toughness and a defensive identity to OKC, while we already have that. He's also got the playoff experience that none of their players really have. Think Posey on the Celts. Having him on the team was more important before we'd won anything together than it was when we were returning a starting five that had won the title together. The fact that Perk might not have been worth the money he got to the Celts doesn't mean that he wasn't worth that money to other teams.

The entire league knows we made a bad trade, he doesn't need to point it out though and bring himself down to that level.  A little unprofessional but nothing to get worked up about

I remember when 'the entire league' thought the Ray Allen trade was bad.  Now, their mouthes are shut tight and not making a peep.

What Perkins are we getting ?  Thats the deciding factor if its 5 or 9 million. The old one or the new one ?  The old one was worth more than 5.  5 for the new one seems about right.

To extend a player who is not on a rookie-scale contract, a team is limited to raises of 10.5% per year.  For a four-year extension, the Celtics were limited to around $23.4 million.  Oklahoma City was able to offer a higher contract because they had salary cap room to renegotiate Perk's current contract, allowing them to offer a higher base salary for the raises.

The Celtics could offer a much bigger raise to Perkins when he hits free agency under the current CBA, but that is open to a lot of risk.  For one, we're looking at a lockout this summer because the NBA owners seem dead set on following the lead of the NFL owners and the Republicans in Wisconsin in wanting to break unions.  If the owners get their wish of a hard cap, the Celtics may not be allowed to sign Perkins for any amount or face a situation where they can keep Kendrick Perkins or Glen Davis, but not both.  If there was no uncertainty about what would be allowed under the next CBA, perhaps Ainge could have come to an agreement with Perkins to sign a contract on the first day of free agency, but with the labor situation, no one has any idea of what the team could give.  It could very well be that if the NBA owners were not signaling a strong intention to try to force the players' union to its knees, then Kendrick Perkins would still be a Celtic.

I think it was a pretty good conclusion that Perkins was going to get a contract that was more than he was worth.  And Perkins seems to have told Ainge that he wanted to test the market.  I think he probably would have chosen to remain in Boston if the money was close, but he would have left if another team was willing to pay much more than Ainge thought reasonable.  With Perk's injury history, I consider any contract four years or longer to be more than Perkins is worth unless it comes with a big discount.

Also, Perkins and Big Baby make a horrible 2/3 of a core to try to build a team around.  Unless your goal is to get into the lottery.

Since I personally had some concern about Perk's ability to stay healthy, I have no problem accepting Danny's concern.

Before the trade I was worries that Perk, Shaq, and JO would all be physically questionable for the playoffs. I have no such concerns about Green or Krstic.
