In no particular order:

Bill Russell
Wilt Chamberlain
Oscar Robertson
Michael Jordan
Magic Johnson
Larry Bird
Shaquille O'Neal
Tim Duncan
Jerry West
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Nenad Krstic

Toughest omission: Hakeem

I get Krstic over Hakeem, but Shaq too???

Ask me again tomorrow, and I'll probably give you a different answer.  I see those two in a virtual tie.

Waaaaiiit a minute
You put Kareem ahead Nenad Kristic? Wow

It's kind of weird to think about.  It seems like for the last 15-20 years the answers were always the same, but the orders rearranged depending on who you ask.  But consistently it seems like the top 7 players were always:

Bird
Magic
Jordan
Wilt
Russell
Kareem
Oscar
(in no particular order)

with more often then not, Bird, Magic, Jordan, Wilt, and Russell composing most people's top 5 (again, in no particular order).

But it's weird to think about because you really have to consider adding Kobe, Duncan, and Shaq somewhere in that list.  I would say when it's all said and done, Shaq and Kobe will be in the top 10, but Duncan may fall just on the outside looking in on most people's list, right next to guys like Hakeem, Elgin Baylor, and Jerry West.  And in all likelihood, LeBron will round out most people's top 10 lists in a few years  :(

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Yup, Roy Rates Krstic as the 11th best player of all time in his top 10 player list.

Where do you guys stand on Duncan vs. Shaq, all time?

I go with Duncan.  Not a big fan of Shaq because he never developed great basketball skills.  Being really big is more luck than anything else...

On the flip side, Shaq always seemed to win their matchups, but who's to say Duncan wouldn't have won those with Kobe has his sidekick?

I see Shaq as head over heels better than Duncan. Too many reasons

But mostly its his dominance. Shaq from '99-'04 was basically unstoppable. He took over games and willed his team to win offensively and defensively. It didn't matter if Kobe or Penny Hardaway was there, he was going to win regardless. I can't say the same for Duncan. He plays too much within the offense to be called dominant. Yes he is a good player, array of post moves, with a high BBall IQ. But he never seemed to "take over" as much as other all time greats. It can be said that Ginobli had as much to do with the Spurs winning those championships

While I don't think he does 50 and 27 could Wilt do 35 and 18 with say 5 blocks in today's NBA?

Scottie Pippen was on ESPN and he said that Kobe is already in his top 5 of all time with Bird and Magic. It got me thinking, who is in your top ten of all time?
Hopefully you were thinking "Scottie Pippen is an idiot"   :-\

I think there are 3 worthy debates here:

Wilt vs. Russell
Gotta go with Russ, titles mean more than stats.  Speaking of stats, didn't realize Wilt only won 2 rings...

Shaq vs. Kobe
Even though the Diesel carried LA for 3, Kobe's won more and can shoot the ball outside of 6 feet.  More skill, more rings, better player.

Magic vs. Bird
This will get me flogged but... MJ has 5 rings to Larry's 3, and his sub-at-center-to-win-finals-as-rookie thing is unparalleled

Jordan
Russell
Magic
Bird
Kareem
Kobe
Wilt
Big O
Duncan
Hakeem

and I got Shaq at 11, only because of how Hakeem abused him in on his way to back to back titles.
on your Magic vs Bird argument - using rings is a more than a tad slanted towards LA.  Magic had by far the better supporting cast for the bulk of their careers and Magic didn't have to contend with a major opponent until the finals whereas the C's had to go through the Sixers for Bird's first 4 years.

Magic's supporting cast included 3 #1 overall picks in Kareem, Worthy and Mychal Thompson.  He also had the following support players, Jamal Wilkes, Michael Cooper, Byron Scott, Norm Nixon and Bob Mcadoo (#2 and after he got his act together after screwing the C's).  Bird had a less impressive supporting cast (regardless of my affection for the players, with the exception of Mchale, they really weren't on the same level on paper).

I here I was thinking I'd look like a genius being the first to have West on my list and here you go beating me to it.    :(
