Hey Guys,

I'm a medical student in Australia and we have an elective placement in November which we can choose to do anywhere in the world.

A colleague of mine said that his friend did an observership with the SA spurs team physician and it was really interesting.

I'm very interested in sports medicine and I was hoping to attempt to organize to do the same.

The problem is that, being so distant, I have absolutely no idea where to start or how to contact the team/who to contact on the teams.

Do any of you have any insights into the medical side of any of the NBA teams? I know there are a few MDs and orthos around the blog as well as a few beat writers who might have some idea of how I could start contacting the teams.

If you have any ideas at all, please let me know!

Mass (and I mean MASS) TPs for anyone who can point me in some direction.

Cheers!

Edit: I also wanted to point out that I don't mean just with the Cs. Anyone who has any insight into any of the teams around the country, it would be very appreciated.

On NBA.com there is a drop down for teams.  If you select each team and go to their websites, there are links to contact the team.

Here is the Celtics contact info
http://www.nba.com/celtics/contact/contact-boston-celtics.html

Here is the Hawks info
http://www.nba.com/hawks/general_info/Contact_Us.html

If you search on each team's page you can find contact info for the team and they can give you more information about the possibilities of doing an internship with them.

Good luck.  Hope it works out for you!

If you do get an observership with the Celtics medical staff you know you're gonna have to come on Celticsblog and release the details of secret injury information to all of us.  ;)

Yeah, the Celtics have way too many injuries.  Go for the Spurs.  They haven't had any injuries this year.  Much less work to do :)

How so? All you have to do is glance at the calendar, pick a date and then make the announcement " XYZ will be back next week...but if this was the playoffs, he would be play". ;)

TP to everyone who replied here.

FL I saw those 'contact us' pages and thought there might be a more formal method of communication. I'll give it a shot though!

Running offer of TPs still stands to anyone who can give any more info!

First of all, welcome ... I am an Otolaryngological Surgeon in the New England area, and it's great to have another medical student sign on to CelticsBlog! (What school are you attending? How many years along are you?).

I don't know a great deal about this topic, but most team physicians today are contracted through a medical/healthcare group, (or similar large health organization/university), and do so because of the umbrella of protection provided by large medical groups for malpractice insurance, as the potential for large judgements awarded to high-paid athletes makes it nearly impossible for independent physicians to get into the field.

Hence, your best bet is to contact medical professionals through some of these large healthcare groups or especially colleges/universities, which provide the same kind of umbrella of insurance security. I have a good friend who is one of the team physicians for the University of Miami, and I would be happy to get in touch with him and refer you, as I'm sure he would be willing to help point you in the right direction.

I thought of doing something similar myself early in my career, and most opportunities at that time started with internships at the college level, mainly through university medical centers, or large health organizations associated with colleges and universities. (There were also some doctors who were paying for the opportunity, at least to get started, instead of the other way around). If I'm not mistaken, it's still pretty much the same, as very few independent physicians want to take the chances required in respect to malpractice insurance costs and judgements awarded to high-priced athletes.

Best wishes for your career ... and let me know if I can be of further assistance! Best advice: If this is what you really want to do, don't let anyone discourage you ... it's a very competitive business, and some people love to lessen the competition by sowing doubt and insecurity. God bless!
