Can anybody tell what the deal is with the Clippers pick we got in the Perkins trade. I somewhere read that it was top 10 protected in 2011. What happens after that?

It is a 2012 top 10 protected pick. It remains top 10 protected through 2015, I believe, and becomes unprotected in 2016.

So who do we go with? Kejuan Johnson or Mickey Mitchel?

Personally I like Johnson's athleticism...

Quote
2012 first round draft pick from L.A. Clippers
The Los Angeles Clippers’ own 2012 first round draft pick to Boston via Oklahoma City (top 10 protected in the 2012 draft, top 10 protected in 2013, top 10 protected in 2014, top 10 protected in 2015 and unprotected in the 2016 Draft). In addition, if the Los Angeles Clippers are required to send their 2012 first round pick pursuant to the above and are also entitled to receive Minnesota’s own 2012 first round draft, then Boston via Oklahoma City shall receive the lesser of the Los Angeles Clippers’ own 2012 first round pick and Minnesota’s own 2012 first round pick. [L.A. Clippers -Oklahoma City, 6/24/2010 and then Boston - Oklahoma City, 2/24/2011]

Can anyone translate to english?  Its too early to comprehend stuff like this...

So, if we choose to take the pick in 2012, we get the better of either the clippers or minnesota's picks?  That sounds like a winner to me if so..

The first year starting from 2012 the Clippers have their 1st rounder outside the top 10, the Celtics get it.  (I hope it has to be the clipper pick.  If not, they trade for the 30th pick, the Celtics then get it)

We don't get to choose if we get the pick or not. If the Clippers pick is #11 or worse in 2012 - 2015, then we get it.

If the Clippers are picking in the top 10 each of those years, then we get their 2016 pick no matter where it falls.

No, we get the worse of the two, and we don't get to choose.  If both the Clippers and Wolves' picks next year are worse than #10, we'll get the lowest of those two picks.  If only the Clips' pick is 11 or lower, we get that pick.  If the Clips are in the top 10 it rolls over to 2013, and we don't get it until either 2016 or the first time the pick isn't in the top 10.

I didn't know about the quirk Jeff mentioned, but the odds of neither team winding up in the top 10 picks next year are awfully slim.

so basically we are rooting for the Clippers to get the 11th pick in the 2012 draft which won't actually be determined (regardless of record) until the lottery ping pong balls are announced

I think that means we have to root for 8 or more teams to be worse than them, right? (they could have the 8th worst record and get passed by 3 teams on lottery night)

Jeff - you are assuming we want the #11 pick that year.

I'm actually hoping DA just got this to stash until 2016 or (more likely) use as trade bait.

The way I think of it is:

1. If we haven't gotten the pick by 2016, we get the pick that year no matter what.

2. Otherwise we get a pick the first year the Clips pick outside the top 10 before then.

3. If we get a pick in 2012 it will be the lower of two between the clips and wolves. (NB: if the wolves pick 11 and the clips pick 7 we don't get a pick.)

fair enough - I'm just glad it isn't this year's pick - weak draft

another good reason it could be good to pick in 2016, Blake Griffin could have left as a free agent in 2014 or 15 I think. If he does, that makes the Clippers a high lottery team again. How great would it be if the C's get a top 3 pick in 2016.
