Was reading the latest from Marc Stein on Corey Brewer, apparently DAL has thier MLE available, and they are clearly a contender, so there's a really good chance he'll end up with Dallas. They currently have Sasha Pavlovic signed to a 10-day contract, and stein said the celtics might be interested in him if the Mavs sign brewer.

Just based off of his picture and stats he doesnt seem to me like the type of guy we want :P

Few things I read about him on the net said his DEF was atrocious, and he's averaged like 4ppg in his illustrious career.

Anyone ever seen the guy play?
Andy Bernard doesnt lose constests. He wins them, or he quits them because they're unfair.

He was arguably the 2nd best player on that Cavs team that made it to the finals.

He's had some nagging injuries that really set back his career and hasn't seem to be able to bounce back fully to be the player he once was.

He is a good finisher around the basket, has good handles, is a good 3 point shooter, and can be a good defensive player when he wants to.

All he needs is confidence.

We don't want anything to do with him.  Inconsistency is the only consistent thing about this guy.  Anyone who couldn't play in CLE do we really want him here.  That team was argubly the worst finals team ever. They were swept and had the lowest ratings ever for an NBA finals.  I call BS on your claim he was second best.

http://www.nba.com/cavaliers/stats/2006/nba_finals_stats.html

As you can see he wasn't their second best player.  He shot .364% from FG range.  But shot very well from downrange .417% with 9.8 PPG.  Even Drew Gooden and Booby Gibson outscored him.  At best he was the fourth best player assuming you would his stats over Zydrunas's 10.8 RPG and 7.8 PPG which I would as Z shot .35% from the field.  My favorite state line of the 2007 finals is Clutch King James delivering the goods when it counts at .35% FG and .20% from the three point line with a scintillating 5.75 TO per game.

My memory (which admittedly isn't always great) from that finals team was a taller, slower Vujacic (aren't all those Euro's the same?  ::)) who hit some big shots and played or tried to play defense on occasion.  Assumed injuries after that slowed him so he is less, probably much less.

I agree.  I just don't see any way he could help us.  I'd rather go with Wafer as the third string SF.

Have you watched those finals?

I don't think he was the 2nd best player (but I admit he can be argued as he wasn't too far off anyway), that he was a good finisher and that all he needs is confidence (I think he needs to try to get fully healthy first). Agreed on the other counts.

Pavlovic was an excellent role-player... but he hasn't been a positive contributor for a basketball team in 3 years.

I always liked Pavlovic.  He was a guy Danny reportedly liked when he was drafted, and he is a shooter who was always a very underrated defender.  I never understood exactly why he has had so much trouble catching on with a good team since his last contract (where he was admittedly overpaid a bit) was bought out.  As an end of the bench option, I think he would be a very good guy to look at, and I would argue that he could help this team more immediately than Brewer (who I see as more of a long-term project).

What discernible NBA skill does Pavlovic have that isn't already replicated on our roster, though?  As least Brewer can come in and play elite defense in spots.  Pavlovic is pretty much below average at everything.  Last year, when he and Brewer were on the same team and were directly competing for minutes, Brewer showed himself to be the vastly superior player, in my opinion.

I'll take him only if we don't get Brewer.  Who else is out there?

I am not sure if he has lost a step, but Pavlovic was an above average defender in Cleveland, has been at times a very good shooter (he has had a couple awful years), and most importantly, has done it in the playoffs (he averaged 30 minutes per game in the playoffs when Cleveland went to the finals).

Brewer on the other hand has had trouble producing on one of the worst teams in the league, and is, IMO, highly overrated defensively.

edit: and to clarify what I mean defensively, I think he is like Tony Allen up until last year.  A ton of defensive talent, but completely missing the consistency you need.  He will follow up great defensive plays with major lapses.  I think he may grow out of that with more experience, and proper coaching, but we don't have time to wait.

I agree with most of the above real question is: are we trying to bring in injury insurance, an offensive or defensive spot contributor or a practice player?  Or somebody we may want to keep for a few years?

I think its an insurance policy, who can also be a spot contributor.  Their rotation is pretty set, so right now, they are just looking for guys who they think can step in if needed.

That sounds right but aren't people here thinking Murphy and Brewer will crack the rotation.  I see Murphy playing maybe big minutes but Brewer a spot player and --Sasha would be just insurance.

I think Murphy will crack the rotation.  But I personally do not see Brewer cracking it (at least when everyone is healthy).  I think he will be fighting Wafer for the spot as 4th wing, which will not be a part of the regular playoff rotation.

With Mavs landing Brewer, the C's might give thought to Sasha Pavlovic. Alas, an elite wing defender he is not. He'd add depth at swingman.
