The other thing I was reading was that Time Magazine thing about the singularity and how supposedly a super computer will find us the secret of immortality.

Don't panic.  It would be more like the elves from Lord of the Rings. Practically immortal, but can be killed.

So essentially life would become a lethal exercise in trying to be most popular

They've been doing stuff with microbe colonies like this for awhile, but they're still years from really large-scale application. 

My guess is these guys are talking up some very inefficient, smaller-scale batches to try and attract some extra capital to the project so they can (very arguably) become efficient enough to be worthwhile.  Still an exciting area of development though.
