What's the latest on Troy Murphy?

I haven't watched a lot of him...is he a good defender? What are his strengths and weaknesses?

Here's my take on him:

I still get chills when I think of Game 2 of the 2008 NBA Finals. You don't bring Leon in so he can make an impact as a 6th man - it's all for the sentiment. He will be at the end of the bench, and who knows, maybe he really is back to full strength. He won't hurt us in either case, that's for sure.

Take him for his locker room presence and 6 fouls. Only gonna be our 15th anyway.

Make it happen danny (and make sure we get Murphy post BO)

Ditto.  Nice post.  Leaves me wondering what all the fuss is about Murphy.

Honestly, I don't get why people are down on Powe.  I think he's just about the best available option out there.  And we sure need help at the PF/C.

Full disclosure is required though: I'm a huge Leon Powe fan, and for a while my desktop was a great pic of him shooting a basket while on his knees (against Phoenix, IIRC).
Celtics fan for life.

Please no Powe please. Evidence here:

Weaknesses
The first major weakness is the fact that Powe had to miss the better part of the last year with two major knee surgeries. Although his mobility and athleticism haven't suffered noticably, teams will be very nervous about taking a chance on a player who has been under the knife...

That was a comment made before he was even drafted. I didn't know he had 2 in college... so now he's at 4?? Wow. I'll take Chris Johnson over him. Something tells me he'll be back but I think it's a bad move.

I love Powe.  Not sure we should resign him, but I love the story of his giving handwritten thank-you notes to the regular-joe staffers with the Celtics after his rookie season.

From what I've read on ESPN, Michael Jordan intends on keeping Joel Pryzbilla, so our best options may be T-Murph and Powe.

I vote no for Leon Powe, love the guy but he's done.

Troy Murphy, and somebody else. NOT Mike Bibby.

Just keep in mind that any pf we sign will be behind KG, Davis and likely Green on the depth chart.

I am a little confused.

Didn't the C's just make a deal with Cleveland, sending Luke and Semih for a future second round pick?  If Cleveland didn't want Powe and the C's did want Powe, why wasn't he just included in the deal? This doesn't make sense to me.

Celtics are over the cap, I believe the salaries just didn't match up hence the fact they waived him right away.

Exactly and just so people know Tommy Heinsohn doesn't think the C's should sign him. On Celtics pre game he said that "if the NBA allows someone to play with crutches then yeah. No he couldn't get time with the Cavs. I'm sure if he could play at a high level he would have got into the games and he didn't."

I know that doesn't mean much to Ainge but does to me. Tommy is as Green blooded as it gets and liked Powe... so... take that for what it's worth.

It's a good question. The salaries would have matched up. Two possibilities come to mind:

1. Ainge made the deal simply to open roster spots, and it was more about getting the Minnesota second rounder back from Cleveland. If they had asked for Powe back, the Celtics would not have gotten the pick as well in return.

2. Ainge wanted to force the Cavs to cut a player from their roster. Perhaps he thought it might be Parker, perhaps he calculated it would be Powe. It turned out to be Powe, and now that the Celtics have the open roster slots, they will look into signing him. If they do, it will be at a cheaper price tag than had they traded for him.
