Just read that Perk wanted $10m year, or almost double what the C's offered (which was the max they could offer under the CBA).  The C's obviously weren't going to pay him that and that kick started the trade talks.

$10m is what Rondo and Ray make.  Perk isn't even half the player they are.  Danny did the right thing.

What Perkins was asking for, and what he'd get are two different things.

But I don't think he'd get much less than 10 per year. I mean he'd get at least 7/8 based on his size and success, given his youth and the shortage of Cs I think he'd actually get a lot more.

We weren't looking to trade Perk, but being able to get guy the caliber of Green was a no brainer.

Perkins, who will become a free agent soon, was going to ask for roughly $10 annually, not a price Boston was going to pay for a center coming off major knee surgery. The Celtics offered Perkins four years and $22 million, but he was looking for about double that.

This is what confuses me. The article says that OKC probably didn't have the money to sign Green and the Celtics did not want to pay the amount that would be required to keep Perk. Yet, OKC will now be able to sign Perk? And, I know Green is an RFA at the end of this year, but the Celts will want to pay big bucks for him at the end of next year?

I think you are right, there's a good chance he'll get it and he'll be a bad contract for some team out there (it won't be the C's). Perk has reached his ceiling as a player and he's just a role player.

Under the curren CBA, perhaps a top-level role player like Perk is worth 7-8 million, but would that type of player get that under the new CBA?  The expectation is that contracts like that will kill teams more than they do now.

Speaking of now, teams that have signed players like that to deals like that regret it almost immediately.  Danny has, I think, made a personal vow to not have any more LaFrenz/Ratliff/Vin Baker/MARK BLOUNT-esque contracts to get a legit big to fill a role.  With the new CBA coming down the pike, that, my friends, is the wisdom of experience.  

Perk, self-proclaimed (and I believe he wanted this) "Celtic for life," a still-young newlywed, is a bit wiser today than he was two days ago.

OKC does not need Green with KD and Westbrook.  They may be willing to shell out for Perk which they feel is a missing role on thier team.

BOS does not feel Perk is worth his asking price.  But Green is a much more talented player.  But at the same time Green will be coming off the bench, so I can't see the C's offering too much for a backup.

There is no guarantee Perk wants to sign with OKC or Green wants to sign with BOS; but you basically have two players who can't agree with their teams; this is usually what happens in those cases.

Herd mentality, maybe.  There has to be some point where you're constrained needlessly by locking up so much money.  It's the early bird that wins on these ones, the guy that sees the wave coming before it hits the shore.
