If a free-agent needs to be picked up, the best option out there is probably Othyus Jeffers.
Who the heck is this??
Jeffers is this really weird guy. He's great in the D-League, and is constantly on summer rosters/not making the cut. I don't know why; it does seem like he should be a role player somewhere considering how bad many long-tenured role players there are; but then again, often times the key to being a long tenured role player is to have "pedigree" that provides initial momentum...i.e. high draft choice, known college, etc. I mean, there's no way Duhon should be in the league at all, but he coasts on momentum of pedigree.
I think Jeffers basically played PF as a 6'5 200+ pounder (he's built like a rock) and is strictly a slasher type of scorer, and a very good rebounder. Dominating in the D-league each year; he's about 25 now. I know Hollinger keeps thinking he's about ready to break into a 15 man roster one of these years once he figures out how to be a TA type SF full time. I really keep thinking he should make our roster instead of Harangody types. I'd like to give him a chance. For what it's worth, in a tiny sample size for Utah, he was able to post a 13.62 PER in his one NBA 14 game stretch. Miniscule sample though.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Othyus_Jeffers His height is probably exaggerated though, but he does have a zest for defense and athleticism: from hollinger's all-star notebook 2 years ago:
As far as players go, the guy I wanted to see was Othyus Jeffers, a previously unknown shooting guard from Robert Morris in Chicago who has blown up for the Iowa Energy this season and should be in the NBA soon.
Jeffers is listed at 6-5, so it disappointed me to see he's actually 6-2. I mean, I've seen some inflated heights before, but this was kind of absurd.
However, Jeffers has the definitive "NBA body": incredibly long arms and a powerful torso in the mold of Mitch Richmond. He defends like crazy, too. All this will make him a useful role player at the 2 in the NBA. He can't shoot well, but he has a high-arcing stroke with a nice rotation, so his troubles might be eased when he gets more reps.
I talked to Energy coach Nick Nurse, and he was effusive in his praise of Jeffers' play and work ethic. Nurse didn't necessarily have great incentive to pump the guy up, either, considering his team likely would suffer if the NBA were to poach his best player.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=hollinger_john&page=All-Star-Notebook-090215He plays GF in the D-league, is 9th in the d-leage in "efficiency" (PER i think, basically), and posts a .480/.282/.724 to go with his 21.4 pts, 8.9 rbs, 2.9 asts, and 2.1 steals. 2.9 turnovers, not awful really for a guy who, in the D-league, has to handle the ball more than he would here.
So in sum: Clearly a d-league FA binky of mine for a couple years. I think he could be a very good 15-20 mpg slasher/finisher/defender/rebounder at the 2/3 due to his strength/athleticism making up for height deficiency.
