Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he was rooting for both of his guys to reach the final but wouldn't pick a favourite to win. After all, he has bigger issues on his mind.

He'll coach the East in the all-star game, meaning he will have to try to keep his own players happy while also giving some minutes to fairly significant stars like LeBron James, Dwight Howard and Derrick Rose. Rivers said he hadn't decided whether he will play his four together or split them up.

Garnett suggested Howard, "because I don't want to play centre."

Pierce smiled at the idea of Howard joining Boston's Big Four for one night — and beyond.

"He would look good in a green uniform," Pierce said.

I love it and hope Doc does play him with the C's big 4 , so he could get a feeling of how it would be to play with a real team

Hey they talked PJ Brown into joining the C's at the all-star break, why not Dwight?

Dwight in 2012!

I think it's clearly more Paul.  If Dwight is here, KG likely won't be.

And while I could imagine KG taking a Ray-like paycut to return, I can't imagine any scenario where he gets paid role-player money to be here.

I dunno, depends on his health after next year. He has seen Shaq swallow his pride to come to Boston and be a role player for the vet min .

He could hit that 18 ft jumper in his sleep til he is 40, and that is pretty much all he would have to do with Howard down low .

I could see him signing for maybe 2 years at vet min if they were able to land Howard

If rings are at stake and KG can still get off the porch and bark, I wouldn't put it past KG to play for love of the game at a much reduced salary.

But only if rings were at stake, and... with...

With Howard, Rondo and Pierce, we're in the mix immediately.

I think KG would come back as a role player if the C's signed Dwight to play with Rondo.

Howard and Rondo on the same team would be almost unfair.  I think Dwight would average about 10 dunks a game - and Rondo about 18 assists....

It would certainly extend the window a bit.

Totally agree. They're games mesh nicely, as well. Can you imagine the two of them together on D?

The Cs desire to get Howard in 2012 is the worst kept secret in the NBA.

I think it would be awesome to get dwight, but i don't know if it's realistic. Who knows what the cba will say in terms of cap and franchise tags. But more importantly, i'm not sure he'd want to come to boston. First, he'd have to be sure that the C's could fill in gaps around him, Rondo, and Pierce to make a contender (it would help if both Ray and KG wanted to stick around for bench roles at the vet min!) that is better than Orlando's chances, and second, it would have to be the best free agent option available. That is easier said than done considering that NYK wants to have max room available to go after Chris Paul (say Paul spurns them so they offer the max to Dwight, and field Melo-Howard-Amare with a d-league backcourt!), the Nets might roll over their capspace and be in Brooklyn, and who knows what the Lakers/Clippers will do. Point is, it not only has to be a great basketball situation, it has to be a situation that outweighs his offcourt activities too. Howard has clearly demonstrated he wants to be a bigger-than-basketball personality, being in movies, etc., and given equivalent-ish situations in LA/NY/Brooklyn I don't see him picking the C's.

Getting Dwight on the Celtics wouldn't be extending the window it'd be opening a new one. Getting a hold of that franchise/alpha dog player is half the battle. With Rondo already on board getting the pieces after Howard wouldn't be to hard.

We couldnt go to Dwight OR Rondo down the stretch, we would have to bring Pierce or Ray off the bench at age 45 and 50 in order for us to be able to hit our free throws in the 4th quarter.

Here's how I see it.  This team is certainly a contender this year and should be a contender again next year depending on health/fatigue and what happens with the Perk/BBD situations.

Say that Howard did arrive here for 2012-2013, who are you surrounding him with?  Rondo and an older and declining Pierce, right?  Maybe you get KG to come back at a reasonable salary and who knows about Ray.  That's an old team.

Is it enough to contend in the Eastern Conference in 2013?  I'm not so sure.  It rides on what they would do to build around Rondo & Howard because that core needs more to be a true title contender, IMO.  I'm not sure Pierce & KG with 2 addtional years of wear & tear is gonna put them past Chicago, Miami, (possibly New York) and whoever else may have emerged on the Eastern Conference landscape in that time.

It may add a year to the current window but I'm not sure how much more they'd be getting there unless there getting some good talent around Rondo/Howard.

Come 2014, Rondo/Howard + whatever doesn't equal automatic title contender, IMO.

Most feel that Howard will land in NY or LA because he's most concerned about being in the spotlight.
