Given the injury to Quis, it is glaringly obvious that we may need to find another 3. I know, this isn't news.  But let's say we can't make a trade (because no one wants our scraps) and we need to cut someone to pick up someone. Knowing what we know now (i.e., quis and jo may come back), who do you cut?

The obvious choices are Luke, Bradley, jo, quis, and wafer. I'll throw in nate just for fun.

Here is my thinking. Can't cut wafer or Nate because they are legit NBA players that at least are healthy and can help this team. So that leaves four candidates. It might be easy to go with JO or quis since we arent gauranteed anything from them. But if (and that's a big if) they can recover, both could be extremely valuable.

That leaves the rookies. Luke obviously has the lowest ceiling. At the same time, he has produced much more than Bradley has. Now, I know this likely will never happen, but I would seriously consider letting go of Bradley. I am sorry but what I see is that he is miles away from becoming an NBA player. At this point, and I know it is early, I would be very surprised if he made it in this league. He needs to be a PG and he hasn't shown the skill or mentality to get there.

If Marquis can't come back you just cut him. He'll still get him money and Boston gets back their roster spot.

Keeping with the spirit of the question, Luke would be the guy I'd cut if someone had to get bumped off the end of the bench.  I see more potential in both Wafer and Bradley.

Ah, but we don't know if he will come back.

cut both Daniels and Gody if Daniels can't come back. Pick up a SF and a PF/C. We need guys that can help in the playoffs, and Gody can't. If Daniels might come back, I would only keep him if there is a chance that he comes back close to 100% and confident . If he comes back as the Daniels of last year, then cut him now.

Luke has a 2 year contract and I believe the same for Bradely.  So if you cut them you're still on the hook for their salaries next year.  I know a lot of people might not be considering that aspect since the money is not coming out of your pockets.  But it's certainly something that will factor into team management's decision.  It's not always about who's better or who has more potential.

Daniels.

If the Celtics are bringing in another guy to take his role, then they must not have faith in him to be able to come back and fill that role.

Exactly.  I think that is why they are scrambling to get a diagnosis in the next week.  Its not only to know whether they need a replacement, but to know if they need to cut him loose (or try to send him to a team under the cap, or under the luxury tax with a trade exception, so they can save some luxury tax dollars).

If Daniels is done, it makes no sense to keep him on the roster.

I agree with other posts on this one, might sound cruel (ala Leon) but if Marquis isn't going to contribute this year he's the cut.  Luke's rebounding alone is a reason to keep him along with the fact that if davis bolts for fa $ we will need backup short pf  ;)
Wafer can give us minutes, Semih is a keeper for sure, Bradley might have potential either with us or in trade value.  JO is on the books, might as well keep him, if shaq is hanging them up after this season then JO is our backup for next year.

I agree. The timing of this is crucial though. If no trade can be done where Quis is used to make the numbers match and then likely be bought out (which I think was the premise of this thread) by the acquiring team, I think we buy him out and use the roster spot for one of our needs(a 3 or 5). If Danny waits too long to use him in a trade, though, the 3 or 5 we could want may be gone. (e.g Troy Murphy to Heat/Magic/Dallas).

Given his fragility and his history of not coming back strong quickly after injury, I think strategically he should be cut first and Gody second if need be.

Ideally, though, MD, Gody and Nate get traded in a 3 for 1 or a 3 for 2, so we have another roster space or two to play with. But, really, who wants our junk?

If we buy MD out, if he recovers enough to be serviceable, can we then acquire him for the vet minimum for whatever remains of the season after we bought him out, or is that not allowed?
