New York rejects Denver's asking price for Carmelo

Carmelo Anthony could have been a member of the Knicks by Monday if the Knicks were willing to meet Denver's asking price for the All-Star forward.

New York president Donnie Walsh so far is not willing to meet the trade terms Denver would require to deal Anthony to New York, which one Knicks official classified as "steep."

According to the source, "there is a deal to be made" but the most recent incarnation was not to Walsh's liking.

The Nuggets offered Anthony and Chauncey Billups to the Knicks for Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Eddy Curry, another starter and at least one first-round pick.

So, the deal looks like this:

NY receives: Carmelo, Chauncey

DEN receives:  Gallinari, Felton, Chandler OR Fields, Curry's expiring contract, 1st rounder

What do you think?  Is NY stupid to pass that up, or are they giving up too much of their team?

I guess the question to me is whether or not Billups would raise a fuss leaving Denver?  If you're going to be giving up 3/5 of your starting lineup for 'Melo & and disgruntled Billups, then that's a problem.  I think its a steep price to begin with for New York (initial inclination is too much) but if you're getting a peeved Billups in the mix, it just makes it more of a pass for the Knicks.

Any team with Amare, Melo and Billups would be pretty darn good.  Can Billups run the D'antoni offense?

This is not really that steep of a price for NY IMO. Felton/billups is a wash for the next 2 years. Then in 2012 they can let Billups walk and go after Chris Paul with a max contract.

Melo is much better than galinari and a 1st

I would do this trade in a heart beat if I am New York. This is very stupid to turn this down. I know they are big time front runners to get him in free agency, but what if he gets traded somewhere for the rest of this season and they talk him into signing a long term contract.

Is keeping Felton ( who will likely be gone by 2012) and/or Galinari really worth risking not landing Melo?

As they've been saying all along, Melo is going to NYK one way or another.  NYK have no incentive to give up any key assets they don't want to.  Realistically, DEN would want players like Fields and Chandler, over guys like Galinari and Felton but they know NYK will not give up those guys so these are even their second choice options.

I think this is a risk that NYK is willing to take.  They are likely playoff bound this year, and that is due in part to their young players gelling and coming along pretty well.  I think it is still in their best interest to get a deal done this season, but I think they can hold off a bit, and push Denver for a better deal.  Especially if Melo is going to have some say in terms of where he goes...

For me the deal is too steep. The reward is pretty great running an offense of Melo Amare and Billups. Thats a great trip right there. However, Denver's asking for three young starters, a first round pick (which will mean the Knicks give up Randolph as well, and Curry's expiring. The Knicks need to get Melo but that is a pretty crazy steep asking price if you ask me.

I agree. NY will get Melo in the offseason without giving up starters and draft picks. Denver is asking too much in return and will not end up trading him to anyone unless they drop their price. Yes, Melo is worth all of those players and picks, but denver has zero leverage as everyone knows he's leaving in a few months, so the only type of team that may give some value for him is a team like dallas that wants to rent him for the playoffs, but they don't have much to give back other than Butler's expiring deal and maybe a young pg.

The deal is way too steep, given what other deals are likely out there.  Denver was stupid to not make the Nets deal work, and now they are just going to have to accept that they are not getting anything close to that.

NY has to make a trade before the deadline.  Maybe they are just calling Denver's bluff, but if they don't make a trade and then don't get Melo they will be kicking themselves for a very long time.

The deal would be fine if they didn't have to give up Felton.


The Knicks shouldn't give up more than Gallinari, Randolph, Curry and a 1st round pick.  They have all the leverage.  But if they absolutely had to give up Fields or Chandler (not both), it would be acceptable.

That asking price is too high. NY needs enough leftover to net Chris Paul. My feeling is, Walsh wants CP and Anthony this season before the deadline.

If he doesn't get traded he's more than likely going to resign in Denver. 

There is little chance he passes up what could be over 40,000,000 in lost salary if the max contract drops to 11,000,000 a year like the rumor. 

So my guess is NY is the one that's behind the 8ball.  They better up the price. 

With or without the trade they won't be making it past the first round of the playoffs.

CP is not getting traded this season.  It wasn't happening before the Hornets became an NBA owned team, and it certainly isn't going to happen now.  Nobody is going to buy the Hornets if CP3 is traded away.
