What are our options for getting some guys who can play?

Seriously.  I'm not even talking about specific players.
Yup

We need Rip. I'll take Sheed too. Something has to happen, quick.

  • GOT IT!!!
Gotta do something. The injury situation is scary. This team is going to be worn thin come April at this rate.

Getting HCA should be scrapped with health being the primary concern now.

Yeah and HCA was supposedly the goal with depth being our strength....looks like "health" is going to have to be the priority again this year. Same as last year even if that means dropping games left and right to stay fresh. Not to thrilled.

In terms of "what can we do", it may be time to ask the league for an exemption to sign a 16th player.  Such exemptions are very, very rare, but in our case we have something like 6 legit injuries (Shaq, JO, Semih, Marquis, Delonte, and maybe Nate.)  We can only field a nine man roster, which the league can't like seeing.

The league might still deny us, because only two of the injuries are going to be "long term" from here, and none of them are season-ending (supposedly).

(Keep in mind that this is different than an "injured player exception", which we couldn't use until next year, and which we probably wouldn't qualify for anyway.)

Out of our 11 guys who were supposed to contribute this year we're down to 6.  Luckily it's the best 6 but still, that sucks.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

I am hoping for Rip to come to Boston and be our guy off the bench who can spot start if needed.

Can we trade for Phoenix's training staff?  It would help us at the center position.

How many times has the league allowed this before.  And what is the cost of this other than obviously having an injury riddled team.  Is there a certain amount we can offer players, does the player have to be a FA right now, etc.?

If the league allowed us to sign a 16th man, it would give us the right to sign a free agent, just like at any other point.  We'd only have a minimum contract to offer.  We could also take back one more player in a trade than we gave up (i.e., receive 2-for-1, 3-for-2, etc.)

In terms of how much it has happened, I have no idea, but it's very rare.  I know our 2007 team got one, which we used to sign Kevinn Pinkney, but at that point it seemed like half our team had been shut down for the year (Pierce, Wally, Big Al, etc., if I'm remembering correctly.)
