So what did everyone think of Bill Walton's color commentary last night?  As an unabashed Walton fan I thought it was great.  He has a unique style and is not afraid to criticize players who aren't getting the job done.  Very refreshing.  I thought he and Mike worked well together as well.

I still believe that if it wasn't for his injuries he would've been one of the top 5 centers of all time - he was that good.
We got lucky to squeeze that last bit out of him with our championship team in 85-86.  The best Celtics team I ever saw.

I agree, I thought he was great! I miss him as a broadcaster.

I love Bill as a Celtic and his time in Boston, and for his contributions to the championship, but I honestly can't stand listening to him ... there are very few people who love the sound of their own voice as much as Bill, and his attempts to seem superior with his vocabulary usage is a bit obvious. Still, as I said, I love the guy as a C, and I feel guilty complaining about him as an announcer. ;)

It was great hearing Bill Walton broadcast the Celtics.  What I want to hear is Bill with Tommy.  Can you imagine the exchange.

"That man is a disgrace to the game of basketball.  He ought to turn in his uniform."   Walton

"This is getting ridiculous!  He walked!"  Heinson

"In the words of John Wooden, 'Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do'"   Walton

"In the words of Red Auerbach,  'He's a bumb and the ref's are blind to it'"   Heinson
"Just do what you do best."  -Red Auerbach-

I thought he was good, but he talked way too much. I also like the fact, that unlike Tommy, he criticized the Celtics when warranted and called out Rondo for taking the night off.

I loved it. The guy says something completely insane every few minutes, but he's a good commentator. And hearing his voice always brings me back to the nba on nbc days.
now, i know its blasphemy to say anything bad about tommy round here but i definitely feel like Walton has more to offer as a commentator than tommy at this point. It was refreshing to hear a healthy criticism of the refs, instead of a feverish obsession with the refs.

To: - ThaPreacher - very funny stuff.  It would be a lot of fun pairing Tommy & Bill together.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
The best quote I've seen (I was stuck with TNT last night) was after Nate Robinson shot a 3 with 23 second left on the clock and Walton said:

"Way to work the ball around, Nate!"

"You've gotta respect a 15-percent 3-point shooter. A guy
like that is always lethal." - Evan 'The God' Turner

I like Walton for a change of pace and he actualy has some brilliant analysis...in between 4 or 5 wildly inaccurate and hyperbilic statements.

Thats the thing, he says too much. He dominated the airtime. Gorman would ask him a question and he would rant for 3-4 minutes changing topics multiple times.

I dont mind it now but Im sure Ill be pining for tommy by the end of the trip.

It is great to get at least some objectivity in the broadcast though.

Oooh i watched the game on tnt.  I would have listened to Bill if I knew he was announcing with comcast.  I saw him sitting next to Mike and didn't know they were calling the game together.

Bill is one of my favorite commentators to listen to, even though I think he is pretty bad at it.  I am highly amused at how crazy he is so I love listening to him.  His ideas and basketball theories are pretty out there.

Walton can be a little silly sometimes. But I don't mind that so much. What bothers me is that he just talks too much. Other than that, he's a nice change of pace. It's good to hear someone other than Donny on the road. I also like that he had the guts to call out Rondo. He would be intolerable as a permanent announcer, but, for a couple games, it's no biggie.
