Semih Erden vs. Rasheed Wallace: Who brings more to the team?

I can't give a 100% answer on this one.

I know what Erden will give you on almost any night. And I kind of like the kid. I know he won't give us a T every night.

I have no idea what Sheed is like now after being away from the game this long. What kind of shape is he in? Can he keep his mouth closed with the new refs T rules? I think we all know the answer to that one.

I'll have to trust in Doc and Danny in this one. Not that I have a choice in it anyway!

Bballee is correct, sheed played great for us in playoffs, had some good games during the season but overall was not an effective player.  I don't want my center shooting 3's unless its as a trailer on break ala mchale.  Semih is nowhere near the player sheed was, of course sheed should have been a DOMINANT big in his career.  Semih gives us another aspect at center posistion.  Our team has shaq, slow power game, perk a bit faster power game, jermaine about the same if IF playing mid range game.  Semih is a fast break center who is a good passer.  He is filler, but with the starting team that is ok.
I'll take semih and his contract and age over rasheed.  I do applaud the job rasheed did in the playoffs last year.

I'd like to have both!!! I know the premise of the thread was either/or, i.e. having to cut Semi to make room for Sheed, but there's a way we can have our cake and eat it too....IF Danny determines that Sheed can contribute. That is the threshold question.

If Danny determines that Sheed can contribute, I think we keep 'em both and cut Gody. I think that is the best solution here.

We're out to win now. If Sheed can contribute, he brings far more than Gody does, and I like Gody and his hustle and his work ethic and all. However, if we are in a position to need Gody this year, that means something bad happened to someone and other dire things.

I can even see Semih and Sheed playing together, inside/out on O. Both would clog up the paint together big time on D. The fragility of our bigs is a huge concern. This could be good insurance.

I say if Sheed is good to go, Bye Bye Gody.

Sheed without a doubt.  Sheed was a very good player throughout his career.  He clearly has skills in many areas.  Semih is raw and a marginal NBA player at this point.

The thing about Semih is people don't expect anything from him.  So when he plays poorly, you just forget about it and say well he's just the last pick in the draft what do you expect.  But when he has a good night you remember it and think he has potential.

Bottom line; in a tight playoff game with some of your bigs in foul trouble, who would you trust in the lineup, Rasheed or Semih?

We're just playing a guessing game right now, no one can reasonably answer your question without witnessing how much game Sheed really does have left.

Well, hopefully *somebody* can answer it, if Danny is faced with the possibility of adding Rasheed.  Projecting how much he'll be able to give, and determining how much his game has deteriorated from last year, will be a big part of Danny's job if Rasheed indicates a preference to play.

Exactly, once Sheed has been evaluated, given a physical, brought in for a workout, and maybe even matched up against Semih in a practice the question will be much easier to answer.

Rasheed, b/c this team is built for the playoffs.  Our mantra has been defense and quality shots by making the extra pass.  While I don't think Rasheed takes the highest quality shots, I do think he's a better rebounder and much better defender than Semih.

To me, the only edge Semih has is that he runs hard down the court every offensive possession.  But in the end, Rasheed wins out IMO.

So, in terms of present day value (or at least, value entering this year's playoffs) who could help us win more, Rasheed or Semih?

The only way you pick Rasheed over Semih is if you confine value to this season and assume Wallace is in playing shape.

When you go beyond this season, Erden has more value, both as a trade asset and as an actual player.  Even if you think that Semih will be no better than an average NBA back-up center, he's shown enough tools that you would certainly have a chance of convincing a Chris Wallace-level GM that Erden can bloom into a Marc Gasol-level center and, last I heard, Chris Wallace is gainfully employed by an NBA team.

Rasheed may be a better post defender than Semih, but Semih disturbs a lot of shots around the rim and covers much more ground. I would also question whether Sheed is a better rebounder at this stage. Semih is much more mobile and while he sets a lot of moving picks he gets to his spot quicker and gets back on D faster.

Sheed without question. I love Semih and what hes been doing, but I dont think he will ever be able to impact a game the way Sheed once could and most likely still can.

I've seen Semih play when in Turkey for Fenerbahce and the national team and have to say he's totally up for it. He defended against Gasol and Odom during the FIBA championships and can hold his own.  He's definitely turned it up a notch since a lazy December with shoulder, thumb, groin, and flu issues.  He's a keeper and given some time will be great.  I have full confidence in him for the playoffs.

Semih will have a long and successful run in the NBA, health permitting (as always).

For this season, he's given me enough reason to have faith he'll continue to improve his consistency and adjust to the NBA game.  Getting up to 10 minutes/game will help that.  He is also coming off of a strong showing in the worlds last year, so he has some big-game experience.

So I'm confident enough in Erden to not make it worth taking a chance on Sheed.

I do agree that this is the real question.  I'm not even entirely convinced that 'Sheed would be more valuable to us in the playoffs than J. O'Neal, but it is a risk I would take.

However, I don't see a realistic way that we can trade JO in for Wallace. 

I really don't want Danny to cut anyone else to make room for Wallace.  That includes Harangody, Wafer, Erden and West.

If Danny is dying to cut someone, I would still prefer to bring in a back up small forward than an extra big.  Small forward is by far the position where we are the thinnest off the bench.  So far, we've been really lucky with Daniels' health this season, but behind him we have nobody to fill in at that position.  If 'Quis were to go down, we'd be left with playing a guard (West or Wafer) or a power forward (Harangody?)as a backup at the 3 position. 

Anyway, that said, I'm satisfied with the team we've got, and think that the most likely scenario is that we go into the playoffs with our current roster in tact.

Wallace can do everything Semih can do, Semih can't do everything Sheed can do, therefore Sheed > Semih. Another mystery solved.
