Who should the C's have given the MLE to last offseason? (Instead of J. O'Neal)

Everyone seems to be up and arms about the J. O'Neal signing because of his recent injury issues. What I don't hear is who they should have signed instead? O'neal was a risk, but it was the right move then and now. He's going to be able to give us 15-20 solid minutes of defensive basketball in the playoffs and that's when it counts; when the game slows down and is more half court set oriented.

Also, Shaq and Jermaine make a combined $7 million over the next two seasons averaging both out to roughly $3.5 million. That's nothing for two solid Centers in this league, even if they're both injury prone.

in hindsight it might not have been a terrible idea to just hold out and wait. 

Imagine if we still had the MLE to pick up a guy like Troy Murphy after he got bought out.

Or we could've snapped up Erik Dampier in December for a 1 yr deal.

Or we could've waited til the buyout season.

I was happy with the JO signing.  Also, I think it's very doubtful that Shaq signs for the minimum if we're still sitting there with the MLE, or a substantial part of it.  Shaq envisioned himself as an MLE player, and I don't think we could have sold him on taking less if we had the means to pay him more.

I suppose, in hindsight, that there were better "value" signings.  Kurt Thomas has given about what JO has, for a minimum deal.  Same thing with Ben Wallace, if he would have left Detroit. 

As you said, though, we needed a big man, and we ended up with two of the best on the market.  JO to date hasn't worked out, but I'm still pretty happy with our big man rotation, and have faith that JO can contribute later.

Shaq would never have signed for the minimum with the MLE still available.  Saving the MLE for later would be idiotic, given the need for a center.  Waiting might have resulted in no O'Neals and one Kwame Brown on the roster.

Jermaine O'Neal was the best center at the onset of free agency who was willing to sign for only the MLE on a contract that didn't last past 2012.  (Brad Miller reportedly wanted a third year, which he got from Houston.)  Guys getting deals in the range of $3-4 million/year were Johan Petro (who New Jersey already wants to unload) and Joel Anthony.  Who wants those guys?  Vet min centers are corpses like Tony Battie and Theo Ratliff.

i would've given the MLE to Shaq and vet minimum to JO

to be honest, when JO played, he actually provided very good defense (except for the 3-4 games he played when he was shaking off the rust)

when he was actually playing I saw him hustle, block shots and get rebounds

id rather him do the surgery since its minor...it wont keep him out of the playoffs...idk i could be wrong, but can someone tell me how long he will be out if he did surgery?

>>say JO did surgery and is out for 2 months, and came back and did the 4 weeks rehab...won't that be our safest bet for him to come back near 100% in the playoffs?

Completely agree with this. I'm certainly in this boat. He was definatley the best option at the time and as loosecannon and Mr. Hobbs said if we didn't sign him to the full MLE first shaq would never have taken the minimum. I'll also add that I was very happy about the signing at the time and wished for the best. But am now a complete and utter JO hater.

I like Morrow, but we needed a center.  Also, Danny wanted to keep guys to 2 year deals, to improve our flexibility heading into 2012 (the projected "rebuild" year.)  Morrow signed for 3 years; Frye signed for a cap-killing five seasons.

As with Rasheed, I'm pretty confident we won't fully appreciate the value of JO's signing until the playoffs come (assuming he's healthy and can contribute).

If JO is healthy throughout the playoffs, it will make the mid level signing worth it.

A healthy rotation of:
Perkins / JO / Shaq / Garnett & Baby... = Championship

The playoffs get very physical under the basket and that crew will put some major hurt on any other team we face. It's gonna get ugly for other teams trying to deal with us in the paint come playoff time.

That being said, if I knew that Rasheed was comign back for a playoff run, would I try to unload Jermain for a good small forward with 3 years on his deal that someone wanted to unload?

Yes.

Perkins / Shaq / Semih
Garnett / Rasheed & Baby

Would also get the job done...
