Quote
The long-anticipated trade of Carmelo Anthony will finally occur next week, two sources told NBA.com's David Aldridge on Thursday night.

The three-team deal between the Nets, Nuggets and Pistons would send Anthony, Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton, along with other players, to New Jersey.

It remains to be seen if Anthony will sign an extension with the Nets, but owner Mikhail Prokhorov is confident that he can convince the forward to do so if he acquires him.

Meanwhile, the Nuggets are determined to exhaust every possibility before agreeing to any deal.

Wow, this is a huge risk for Jersey if they don't have a contract extension in place before they make the trade . I guess this is probably their only chance to get a superstar because I don't see any big name free agents signing there with the current roster they have , but if Melo goes to NYK after this season and the Nets will be screwed for another 5-10 years .

New Jersey is 6 games out of 8th place with over half the season left. They could still make the playoffs. This is a net positive for NJ if it pans out. A desperate move, but a net positive.

You think giving up that much talent for 4-6 extra games (2-3 at home) is worth it?

Even that isn't a guarantee. I think they should get a window for an extension or something. That's ridiculous to rent a player like that. If you are the Spurs, maybe one last run is worth it, but not for a team like the Nets. But hey, Prokhorov has big ideas.

That's a crazy risk that the Nets are taking if he hasn't agreed to sign the extension.

A major coup for the Nuggets if they can get Favors and two picks out of the Nets without Melo agreeing to an "extend and trade".

If they make the playoffs, they can then make a pretty good size pitch to Melo on why he should stay in NJ. Plus at this rate, the Nets have almost as good a chance to make thae playoffs as the Nuggets do.

I just hope something gets done soon to end this madness. im getting so sick of this. Melo will eventually get to the Knicks one day.

That's basically my line of thought.

If they acquire Billups, Melo, and Rip Hamilton, they'll be as good as the Knicks, talent wise. The Knicks have a brighter future and better young core, but for this season, and probably next the Nets would be in the same tier as Chicago. Decidedly below Miami, Orlando, and Boston..but better than Atlanta, and the rest of the East.

Plus, if you've got the guy in practice, in games, checking out the site in Brooklyn...they'll have their best shot to sell Melo on the Nets without needing to go through back channels or "anon sourced" leaked articles.

So the Nets are this desperate - or are they this smart to call his bluff?

This actually might work out - because Brooklyn IS part of NYC, and the extension $ ARE important to Melo - so we will see if the Knicks job is more important to him, or not...

I want Melo to resign with the Nuggets this summer so badly.

I was thinking along the Brooklyn lines as well over the summer in the Bron chase.  Brooklyn offers an opportunity like no other for an NBA superstar.  That player will be going to a market dying for someone to follow.  The marketing $ alone will be huge.  Any really smart player will see that as a chance to be the face of the first professional franchise in Brooklyn since the Dodgers left.  That area was fanatical about its team.  Put an NBA team there and just watch the fans line up for tickets and merchandise.  They'll be the envy of every other team in the league that's even remotely considered relocation.

Yeah, Nets front office are either crazy, or crazy like a fox.

If Carmelo opts against an extension, he risks millions. And not just a few.

Other teams with cap space -- Cavs, Nuggets, Pistons, Warriors, Rockets, Pacers, Bucks, Knicks, Thunder, Kings, Raptors, Wizards.

There is a lack of quality suitors next off-season. Most of those teams are lottery squads or borderline playoff teams. A lot of underwhelming cities + small markets.

The Rockets and Knicks would give the Nets a run for their money but outside of them ... the Nets offer would be the most attractive and they'd have the added bonus of having Carmelo on the team for half a year allowing them to convince him that NJ/Brooklyn is the best place for him to be.

I think the Nets would have a good chance of convincing Carmelo to stay.

I may be in the minority, but I think Anthony is one of the most overrated players in the NBA.  He'll have great star appeal in NY or NJ.  But he's not going to carry a team.  He'd better hope that if any trade takes place it includes Billups.....And that Billups ends up not getting bought out.  Anthony became twice the player when Billups came to Denver.
There's nobody on New Jersey's roster close to Billups.

If Billups is bought out or not included in the trade, NJ will have star power, but won't be markedly better.

No way this happens without Billups in the deal.

Video says 4 things to me:

1) Carmelo does not want to be vilified to the degree LeBron was in Cleveland, but he understands that fans will be heartbroken if he leaves.

2) Carmelo is going to one of NY or NJ, all this Rockets talk, or maybe Dallas talk is just flotsam in the blogopshere.

3) NJ's meeting between Prokorhov (and not Brooklyn native Jay-z, although he might be there, he won't matter as much) and Melo next week will be the make or break point for the Jersey trade.

4) I really like Carmelo Anthony, and I'm starting to hope he goes to the Knicks.

Latest report on RealGM says Carmelo does not want to talk to any teams, NJN or NYK.  He said it's the job of the front office to do the talking.  I took it to mean he has no interest in signing on with NJN because that's the impending deal and he does not want it to happen.

NJN are not going to pull the trigger without Melo signing the extension.
