The Portland Trail Blazers announced on Thursday that guard Brandon Roy will have arthroscopic surgery on both knees.

The surgery is slated for next week and there is no timetable for his return. The operation will be performed by Dr. Don Roberts in Vancouver, Washington.

"I'm trying to do the best thing I can to get back on the floor," Roy said. "We've been able to get a number of different opinions and it's something we've decided."

That sucks, first they lose Oden and now Roy's career could be over. Portland has the worst luck.

I wonder what kind of surgery they're looking at doing...I've read in some places that microfracture surgery may be his best option, as that's the only way for him to get some cartilage back in his knees.  Getting that on both of his knees would obviously keep him off the court for quite a long time, but it may be the only hope he has of regaining some semblance of his career.

didn't they bring this Roy stuff on themselves a little bit. They gave him the green light to play in the playoffs last year when he was only playing on one leg. I remember the national media questioning that at the time, it was so bad

Honestly, it sounds like his knees are just bad...sooner or later this was going to happen.  Not a lot they could have done.

Sad part is that this franchise did all of the right things to fix their image and bring in character people at all levels.  They deserve better.

Hopefully Roy and Oden can make miraculous recoveries.

I disagree.  They gambled on Roy, and lost.  Everyone knew he had bad knees, and this is (likely) one of the reasons Ainge passed on him.  It looked like everyone was wrong about Roy during his first couple of seasons with the Blazers, but now it turns out that everyone was right, and the Blazers were wrong.

This isnt bad luck, its just a gamble that didn't work out.  That might sound the same, but its not: it's like me playing Powerball and not winning -- is that bad luck?  No, no one ever expected me to win Powerball.  I took a gamble (my $1 quickpick) and it didn't pay off.

Awful news, especially for the Blazers, but for the entire NBA as well. Hate to see this happen to such a young star like this. Blazers were a promising young team, I hope the surgery allows him to come back in a year or two and at least give some production... Could be a Grant Hill clone. Hill coulda been one of the best players and was but injuries nagged him, then came back to be a great role player. Hope a similar path is in store for Roy.

It's kind of like dejuan blair in san antonio. everyone knows his knees are a ticking time bomb. everyone knows he's a very good player. so for a few years on a 2nd round pick salary, it's a major win. If you can get him on short, cheap deals, great. But if some team offers him a big(ish) deal, that's the poor gamble, and they'd be foolish.

and the other egregious thing is that they locked him into a maximum contract the year before he was going to be a restricted free agent, i.e. one year before Rudy Gay got one as a restricted free agent from the same class. I understand locking up a guy if youre getting a deal, but when you have control over a restricted free agent, why the maximum you could a year early when you could wait and guaranteed the same player for the same deal?

From what I understand, playing last year couldn't make his knees worse, so it was purely pain tolerance. So playing when he did last year didn't really affect this.
