I have a British namesake who is a comedian/writer. He contacted me today with the following question:

Quote
What automobiles do tough Americans drive who don't have much money? You know, people with stubble who hang out in bars, and then get kicked out at closing time and sleep in their cars. I'm writing a story and I don't think you get Vauxhall Novas in the USA so I thought I'd make the type of car more universal.

I'm not much of a car guy.  Any suggestions?
Yup

I say old ford trucks with those tiny trailer things on the back that you can either sleep in or put a dead deer in

You're describing the majority of my dad's side of the family, so I would say I have a little knowledge on the subject. I would echo eja117's comment and say an old Ford or Chevy truck. Not sure I'd use the camper on it, but an old 4 wheel drive truck or Bronco/Blazer is the right answer.

I was gonna say a rusty bronco is a good one if you want a 4 wheel drive kind.

If you want more sporty looking ones, i see a lot of rusty pontiacs kicking around

Pontiac Trans Am:

Don't want to offend anyone, but I think people thought this was a slick car in the early '90s, but turned out not to be the greatest, so I see a lot of used, rusty ones kicking around that can be had for a couple grand. They seem to show up outside of dive bars a lot. Like, really bad bars, really often.

Firebird/Trans Am

Or, just as trashy-bar but more "rural," Can't go wrong with the Ford Bronco: Just as likely to show up outside a crappy, dirty bar, but more rural than the pontiac.

Or for pickup trucks:

1990 Ford Ranger:

1990 Dodge Ram:

Here's the perfect one: the owner of this car in a novel gets in a lot of fights (Ford Bronco):

Thanks peeps.

I knew I came to the right place.

And yes, EJA, there is a "British Redz" of sorts.  When I first got on facebook, I did a search for my name to see if there were any others on there with the same name (my last name is pretty rare).  I found a British guy and we've kept in touch here and there over the last couple of years.  He's a comedian and a musician.  He's done a few short films with another guy. Occasionally he asks me for some "American" points of view for a character.

I posted this on here at some point, but here's a voice over I did for a film he did.  The character is "Dick Biscuit - Private Eye" ...Dick Biscuit is apparently obsessed with Kurt Russell.  This is a dream sequence where Dick is dreaming he is in "Big Trouble in Little China" with Kurt.  I do the voice for the trailer/  ;)

Anyhow, some great suggestions.  I'll pass them along, and feel free to keep them coming.

The Grand Am reminds me of the scene from Boogie Nights where they try to sell the drugs to the guy with the Chinese Firecracker hooker.
