The problem with Randolph is he has good length and "athleticism," yet I wouldn't consider him good at any one aspect of playing basketball. He is a decent rebounder. But he is a terrible shooter, scorer, defender, passer, etc.
Not sure why "athleticism" is in quotes, he is an excellent athlete, especially for his length. He is very similar to Odom in that respect. Unfortunately, so far he is consistent only in rebounding and shot blocking.
The problem is he is not a consistent player, but he has shown the ability to shoot, score, defend, and pass all at various points and games. Look at the above video against the Spurs for example and he has other big games like that. He was on my fantasy team on Golden State one year and he had some big outburst games. There simply has not been consistency from him but there also has not been consistent playing time and a decent situation either, so it's hard to judge him.
And again, very young player.
Here are some of his box scores from last year for example (and he missed a lot of that seaosn with injury):
11/9 Min ,W, 146-105
30 mins, 8-14 FG .571 FG PCT 7-8 FT .875 FT PCT 3 STL 3 BLK 2 TO 2 FL 3 ORB 4 DRB 7 RB 23 PTS
12/5 Orl, L, 126-118
35 mins, 10-23 FG, .435 FG PCT, 8-9 FT .889 FT PCT 1 STL 1 BLK 0 TO 4 PF 6 ORB 7 DRB 13 RB 5 AST 28 PTS
12/23 @Nor L 108-102
36 mins, 5-14 FG .357 FG PCT, 2-2 FT 1.000 FT PCT 2 STL
8 BLK 1 TO 4 PF 3 ORB 5 DRB 8 RB 2 AST 12 PTS
And I'm cherry picking box scores obviously but those are some impressive, very complete games. You can find some more here on his game log (
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/gamelog?playerId=3455&year=2010 ) and you can also see how inconsistent his playing time was there. He'd go from 36 minutes to 7 minutes the next game in some situations.
Just the fact is that while he has not been a consistent player, he has shown the ability to do everything but shoot threes in his career at times. He has shown passing, steals, blocks, jump shooting, free throw shooting at a great percentage for his height, great finishing around the rim, offensive and defensive rebounding, and the ability to run the floor like a gazelle at nearly 7'.
Guy has potential, that is for sure.
