Caron Butler left the Mavericks' game against the Bucks on Saturday night in the first quarter with a left knee injury.

The extent of Butler's injury isn't yet known, but Dallas is preparing to be without the forward for an extended period of time.

"We're afraid that it's potentially serious," Rick Carlisle said. "We'll find out [Sunday] where things are at, probably later in the day."

Butler was expected to remain in Milwaukee overnight before returning to Dallas on Sunday.

The Mavericks were already playing without Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion.

This sucks, just when I thought the Lakers would have some competition in the West, this happens. If it is indeed a serious injury, Dallas won't have enough fire power in the playoffs.

It's not just the Celtics with the injury bug...

Spurs have avoided it so far though, now at 29-4

This is too bad. The Mavs could have been serious competition to knock the Lakers out of the West. Hard to see that happening without Butler.

They might be able to trade Caron Butler's expiring contract for a replacement ... and keep their (long shot) title hopes alive.

So lame.

The Mavs, like the Celtics, are an old team weak to injury, but this is rough.  At least they'll be getting Roddy Buckets back soon, who might help make up for Caron's absence somewhat.  They also have DeShawn Stevenson, who at least has played good defense and knocked down 3's.  But without Caron they'll really be missing a wing scorer.

Unfortunately because of the upcoming lockout it'll be much more difficult for teams to parlay expirings into talent this season.

It looks like Milwaukee regret acquiring Maggette + Maggette is seriously unhappy about both living in Milwaukee and his lack of playing time on the Bucks. So yeah, Maggette would surely be available for an expiring contract.

I think the Mavs would need someone better than Corey Maggette though. If they put Beaubois on the table, maybe some future draft picks, they could put together an interesting trade package for a legitimate All-Star type talent ... if someone became available.

Has anyone ever not regretted having Maggette?

I am hoping this frees up some playing time for Dominique Jones.

He looked good in summer league and in preseason. A nice slasher/scorer who is a solid passer and defender. Lacks range on his jumper and looks a sub-par rebounder though.

It's a pity he got caught in Dallas' over-crowded backcourt situation. I think he could be a useful rotation player if given the chance.

What stinks about this for me is that it took what looked like an easy victory in my head-to-head fantasy league game this week and turned it into a nail-biter.  Hard to overcome losing 1 3/4 games in a close one.

Well, this could be an interesting situation if it is serious.  Butler was a valuable expiring contract who they were very hessitant to trade because he was playing so well.  Perhaps this injury will convince them to pull the trigger on a trade that could make them even better.

I like Butler a lot, but up until recently, he has had some major issues fitting into the system.  He also has had a history of taking bad shots at inopportune times.  Thats a risky guy to be relying on.

Yeah, right now, I would put them as a frontrunner for Igoudala, and I think they may just be jumping stronger into the race for Melo.  I also could see them go hard after a combination of Jackson and Wallace in Charlotte.

Iguodala would make the most sense to me, but I'm not sure he'll be available due to the upcoming lockout situation.  The Sixers may just elect to stand pat assuming that their contract situations will improve.

Stephen Jackson would be a decent fit, too.  I think that's probably the Mavs best bet.
